Tata Nexon SUV has secured the first-ever 5 star safety rating in Global NCAP crash test results. The updated version of the car stays true on two factors – manufactured in India and sold in India. The score was earlier restricted to 4 stars due to lack of only one adult protection feature. Tata has included seat belt reminder for both the driver and passenger on the new version. The new Nexon SUV scored 16.06 out of the total 17 points for adult protection, much higher in comparison to the 13.56 points for the older version.

The cars produced from December 7, 2018 will feature the additional safety feature. The current version provided adequate safety for the head and neck area of the front passengers but addition of a safety reminder fulfilled all the conditions demanded by Global NCAP. The shell is rated stable when hitting a barrier 64 kph, even passing the side impact test with good points. The marginal moniker for the car has changed to good with the single change. The platform that Nexon uses is really impressive.

Apart from the child seat anchorages, all variants of the Nexon are available with dual airbags and ABS as standard. The adult protection remains impressive on all options. The range of Nexon starts from INR 6.23 lakh for the base petrol version, going all the way up to INR 10.66 lakh for the diesel AMT version.

Commenting on the Nexon’s stellar showing, David Ward, Secretary General at Global NCAP, said, “This is a huge landmark for car safety in India. Congratulations to Tata Motors for achieving India’s first five-star rating for adult occupant protection. The Nexon was engineered in India and this shows the huge capability of the domestic industry to achieve excellence in safety design and performance. With the Nexon, Tata has shown the global car industry that to achieve five stars you can ‘Make in India’.”

Jeep Wrangler scored just 1-star in Euro NCAP results, disappointing everyone in the era of technology where every brand is trying to bring 5-star safety to the passengers. The same league of tests brought 5-star ratings to Audi Q3, Volvo V60 and S60, Hyundai Santa Fe, Jaguar i-Pace, BMW X5 and Peugeot 508. Jeep Wrangler is an off-road car with capabilities surpassing most everyday SUVs. The 1-star safety rating takes Jeep away from the modern lineup of cars that use multiple sensors to avoid collision and much more. Fiat Panda, another vehicle considered for this test, scored zero stars and came out as the most disappointing vehicle in the batch.

The 2018 Jeep Wrangler is available with front two and rear two airbags, saving the head section of passengers from both rows from touching the glass section. The safety package on Wrangler includes seat-belt reminder and manual speed limiter. Fiat Punto was the first car to bring zero stars in Euro NCAP in 2017 and Panda became the second product. Jeep is taking things lightly as lane keep assist and automatic emergency braking is not even listed under the optional model. The cars with five star ratings are also having certain limitations with them.

Hyundai Santa Fe with optional panoramic sunroof saw airbag deployment and tearing problem for the side while X5 faced problem with knee airbag function. Jeep Wrangler looks huge in comparison to most cars with similar engine size but only size cannot absorb the amount of force that comes into action at the time of a collision. The car weighs over 2000 kg for the petrol and 2100 kg for the diesel engine variant. The car measures 4583 mm in length, carrying a wheelbase of 2947 mm in the Unlimited variant. The diesel engine on use is 2.8L while petrol available here is 3.6L V6.

A recent test of the durability of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza has brought laurels to the company. The Brezza is one of the highest selling SUVs in India and with its safety ratings now, it is bound to become even more popular. The Global New Car Assessment Program (Global NCAP) conducted the crash test and rated the compact SUV four out of five stars for an adult occupancy and two out of five stars for child occupancy. The results noted that the car was able to provide adequate protection to the head and neck of the driver and the passenger and its body shell remained stable through the test.

“The four-star result for Maruti Suzuki’s Vitara Brezza is really impressive. It demonstrates clearly the safety engineering capabilities of India’s leading vehicle manufacturer. It also shows the beneficial effects of the Indian Government’s new crash test standards helping to raise levels of vehicle safety. We are getting very close now to seeing India’s first five star car,” David Ward, secretary general of Global NCAP said.

Maruti Vitara Brezza Global NCAP Crash Test Video

The two star rating for the child occupancy was due to the markings of the ISOFIX anchorages, which were not up to the standards of Global NCAP. Even though the 18-month old dummy was faced towards the front, the 3-year old dummy did receive quite a good protection. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza was one of the nine cars by Maruti Suzuki that was launched in compliance with the latest crash norms by the Indian government. These latest crash test norms were enforced for all the new launches from October 1, 2017, while they will extend to the sale of all the cars from October 1, 2019. They have been set for full-frontal impact, off-set-frontal impact, and side impact on the cars. The chief rival of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is the Tata Nexon, and it also received four stars by Global NCAP.

The Suzuki Jimny is quite the hype of in the world right now. Just in the Indian markets, there were great speculations of the car being launched but the hopes were shattered when Maruti Suzuki announced that the cute and cuddly Jimny will not be making its way to the Indian markets. Euro NCAP decided to test the metal with crash tests of the Jimny and the results have been listed. The Suzuki Jimny has been awarded three out of five stars when it comes to the safety of the vehicle.

A series of tests were performed to test the crashworthiness of the Jimny. The low rating of the car is due to the age-old design of the ladderfame chassis and the low provision of the driver aids. After the crash tests, Euro NCAP wrote, “In the frontal offset test, there was insufficient pressure in the driver’s airbag to prevent it from ‘bottoming out’, allowing the head to contact the steering wheel. The passenger compartment was extensively deformed in the offset test, especially around the door-frame and the score for the driver’s chest was penalised for this unstable collapse. Combined with marginal dummy readings, protection for this body area was rated as weak.”

“Although dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of both driver and passenger, structures in the instrument panel and dashboard were thought to pose a risk of injury to occupants of different sizes, and protection was rated as marginal.”

“Tests on the front seats and head restraints showed marginal protection against whiplash injury in a rear impact. A geometric assessment of the rear seats indicated good protection. The standard-fit autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system performed well in tests of its functionality at the low speeds, typical of city driving.”

The crash tests show that the Jimny is not the car to be in case of an accident. Looking at the car, it seemed like it is quite tough but the recent reports show that it crumples during crashes where other cars like the Tata Nexon secured quite a high rating.

Out of the total 15 cars in their lineup, Maruti Suzuki has disclosed that 9 cars comply with the latest crash test norms in India. These latest norms have been in effect for all the new launches in India since October 1, 2017, and will extend to all production cars in the country from October 1, 2019. Pedestrian protection norms will kick in after October 1, 2018, and will cover all the cars sold in the Indian markets two years from then. Out of all the cars in their lineup, the S-Cross, Ciaz, Ertiga, Vitara Brezza, Baleno, Dzire, Swift, Ignis and Celerio meet the norms that will come in effect from 2019 for full-frontal impact, offset-frontal impact and side impact.

The other models in their offerings will become compliant with the norms before they kick in, as per the company. The next generation of the WagonR is already in development, as are the replacements for the Alto K10 and the Alto 800. This leaves three cars, namely the Omni, the Eeco, and the Gypsy. The company will have to re-engineer these vehicles to a great extent to make them compliant with the crash test norms. There is virtually no information about the replacements for the Omni and the Eeco. However, news about them is expected soon since they are quite popular in their own segments; the Omni sold 80,583 units last year and the Eeco sold 74,554 units.

For the global markets, Suzuki has unveiled the new Jimny which is expected to replace the age-old Gypsy. The Jimny is already compliant with the crash test norms that will set in soon, and replacing the Gypsy with it seems like a wise move that the company should announce soon. Maruti Suzuki has a fully-functional crash test facility in its R&D and validation facility in Rohtak, Haryana. Reports from the past reveal that the company conducts nearly two scores of crash tests for every new model that they develop in the factory.

Swift got 83 percent score for adult occupants, 69 percent for pedestrian protection, 75 percent for child occupants and 25 percent for safety enhancing technologies. The biggest difference between a car sold in India and other major markets is the number of airbags.

They fall straight from six to two on the India spec Swift. The radar brake support helped the second Swift bring 88 percent score for adult protection and 44 percent for technology.

Global NCAP: More than 6 lakh Zero-Star Cars Sold in 2016 in India

Safety is currently the biggest concern of Indian car buyers while looking through those limited number of options in every segment. The time is long gone when people saw the size of their car as the only safety measure in the country.

Technology has driven this segment to another level as you can get a long list of safety features that help you survive through a crash that was not even under imagination in the last century. Indian market has a long list of manufacturers that offer basic safety features as standard across their lineup.

Scorpio-Crash-GNCAP

Toyota, Hyundai and Volkswagen are few among those who offer ABS and 2 front airbags as standard while Ford offers six airbags in its top spec Figo hatchback and all other cars in the lineup.

Maruti Suzuki was criticized for not taking safety under concern but now, their NEXA lineup of cars even offer ABS and airbags as standard. Things are still on the bad side when we see the results from Global NCAP and the reason behind that is even more alarming than ever. The dual standard adopted by these brands for developed and developing markets is the only reason for this result.

Renault-Kwid-NCAP

Structural rigidity of the frame is one big factor that Indian cars lack currently. Most cars from the entry level segment are vulnerable to this deficiency as they are folded like paper when involved in high speed crash.

One big example of double standards was the use of a smaller airbag in India spec Renault Duster that got 3 stars while the same car from Latin America got 4 stars with bigger airbag. Cost cutting in companies by leaving basic safety behind resulted in more than 6 lakh cars with zero safety rating being sold in India last year.

Duster-no-airbag

The number is huge and takes into account one of the best seller in this segment, Maruti Alto. They nearly sell around 2.5 lakh units of the entry level hatch back every year and still, getting ABS into the same along with dual channel airbags was not considered ever. The same story is heard for Renault Kwid as it is also one best seller in the market.

In US, no car maker is allowed to sell cars with low safety rating and thus, every small car comes with 6 airbags and ABS on its basic trim. They will offer air conditioner on the second variant while all safety features can be found on the base trim.

Celerio-Global-NCAP

Some of the popular 5-star rated cars carry technology like autonomous braking and traffic alert that helps the driver deal with tough circumstances on road.

The car automatically brakes before collision even if you put your feet away from the pedals and let you know when someone is passing from the wrong side at full speed. Indian traffic conditions certainly need more safety in the cars as people are moving up from the basic cars to buy a car that not just gives them some cold breezes but also protects at tough times.

Skoda Kodiaq scored 5 star rating in the recently conducted crash test by Euro NCAP. The seven seat SUV is huge and came with 2.0 TDI engine on test. The car weighs 1635 kg and comes equipped with seven airbags.

The same car came with technology loaded appeal, bringing autonomous braking, speed assistance and lane assist system on the car. Kodiaq got 92 percent score for adult occupants, 77 percent for child occupants and 71 percent for pedestrians. Not just that, it brought 54 percent score for the safety assistance.

Skoda-Kodiaq-Euro-NCAP-Crash-Test

Skoda may launch the Kodiaq around the festive season of 2017 in India. Prices can be expected to fall between INR 26-28 lakh while the placement will be done right above the Superb. It will be known for the large number of features and would be a good option for those who need extra legroom and comfort in all seats.

It will rival Hyundai Santa Fe and Volkswagen Tiguan while indirect rivals include Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour. It actually carries the same fascia as most other Skoda models sold internationally.

The current price of Kodiaq internationally converts to around INR 20 lakh of India. This could clearly undercut the rivals by a huge margin but brands have lot other taxes to pay when they are bringing some international product to India. Skoda Kodiaq measures 4697mm in length, 1882 mm in width and 1676 mm in height.

It offers the most technologically rich cabin in its class and a 720 mm boot space in the 5-seat variant (2065 litres boot space with rear seat folded). The wheel size will vary with variants, ranging from 17 to 19 inch. Heavily resembling the Vision S Concept, the car even carries 8 inch infotainment system with 64 GB flash drive.

Base Model of Renault Duster Scores 0 Stars in Global NCAP Crash Test | One Airbag Model Gets 3 Stars

A recent report from Global NCAP crash tests claim that Indian made Renault Duster scored zero stars when it was tested for the frontal crash for adult occupation protection. The same model scored 2 stars for rear child occupant protection.

The model used here is the base variant of Renault Duster that comes without even a single airbag. NCAP has been conducting crash tests from 2014 and India’s crash test speed for the frontal crash is 48 kmph. Global NCAP takes this speed up to 64 kmph.

Renault-Duster-Zero-Star-Crash-Test-2

The results were shared with Renault and they requested a test for the middle variant with single airbag. The car with one airbag scored 3-star rating in the same test.

The difference that was noticed is that the same car that is built in Colombia showed 4-star rating with driver only airbag. The result of the investigation brought the real reason behind this difference. The Latin America Duster came with a bigger airbag. The same was tested in 2015 while the current generation Indian car failed to perform the same.

Commenting on the results, David Ward, secretary general of Global NCAP, said, “The version of the Duster with an airbag scores three stars, but this too fell short as it was fitted with a smaller one. A model with the correct size of airbag should be provided as standard.”

2017-Renault-Duster-Petrol-Automatic

Renault recently launched Duster Petrol CVT Automatic in India

The same test was conducted for Renault KWID and it even scored the least with only 1 star for the airbag version and zero for the base variant. Consumers are demanding safer cars and most brand are now offering dual SRS airbags as standard on its base variants.

Mahindra and Maruti offers the same as optional while Toyota and VW offer the same standard. Brands like Hyundai and Ford are even offering cars with 6-airbags in the top spec version. Ford Figo is the most affordable car to get 6 airbags.

The Ford Mustang has received a very dismal rating of 2 star for safety parameters at Euro NCAP crash tests. Also, the Ford Mustang has become the very first car from such a mainstream manufacturer to receive a poor crash test rating since 2008. The current Mustang is the sixth generation model, being the first ever to be sold in the European markets. Fortunately or unfortunately this was the muscle car’s first ever appearance at NCAP crash test.

Ford Mustang Scores Only 2 Stars in Euro NCAP Crash Safety Tests

According the experts, Mustang’s low score is a result of its autonomous energy braking (AEB) system. Also after the crash test, it was revealed that the front airbags of the car did not produce sufficient inflation to produce an impact so as to protect the driver’s head and the body. The dummy driver in the crash test contacted the steering wheel and also making airbags touch the dashboard.

The full width digit barrier test made the rear seat passengers slip under the belt. Such kind of phenomenon can lead to knee, femur and pelvis injuries. The Mustang scored only 72% on the adult occupancy. The car also scored very badly on the child safety test with a 10 year old prototype dummy hitting the c-pillar. The child safety was rated as least adequate.

screen-shot-2017-01-25-at-10-43-46

Other numbers include the mustang scoring 64% on the child safety test and just 16% on the safety assist parameters. Also keeping up with the situation, Ford Motors gave an assurance to the NCAP that the company will come with an updated model of the car later in the European Markets. Ford also said that the new mustang will come up with per-collision assist features including pedestrian detection, a forward collision warning system and autonomous emergency braking (AEB). Also it can be seen as the need of the hour for a company like ford to not loose its market due to bad publicity it has earned by bad safety ratings.
