After a recent alliance with a Chinese firm Zhejiang Qianjiang, Harley-Davidson is all set to enter the premium small displacement motorcycle segment, as confirmed by the brand a few months ago. As per the newly formed alliance, the two brands will be co-developing two different motorcycles, first of the two being a 338cc Harley-Davidson Streetfighter. It will be the most-affordable product by the popular American brand. The motorcycle will be manufactured in China and it will also be exported to the other parts of the world.

Harley-Davidson took an opportunity of alliance with the Chinese company Zhejiang Qianjiang, considering their ability to meet the customer requirements as well as having an established supply base. According to the official prototype photos, the Harley-Davidson streetfighter will be powered by a 338cc twin-cylinder liquid-cooled engine.

As per the recently revealed prototype of the upcoming motorcycle, it gets a quite modern streetfighter look which contradicts the traditional cruiser styling used by the brand for the rest of the portfolio. It is the first lightweight and compact motorcycle from the brand that is bound to attract the premium motorcycle buyers in Asia.

The most affordable motorcycle from Harley-Davidson gets a trellis frame while the all-LED headlight and tail light setup gives it a distinguished stance. The suspension duties are handled by upside-down front forks and the motorcycle gets an adjustable monoshock at the rear. As far as the braking is concerned, the streetfighter gets dual petal disc brakes at the front and a single disc brake at the rear end.

According to the reports, the 338cc motorcycle will be launching in China by the end of 2020. The motorcycle is expected to get its official debut in India in the year 2021 though, no official details have been given yet. When launched in the market, the 338cc Harley-Davidson Streetfighter will compete with the likes of Benelli TNT 300, Yamaha MT-03, Kawasaki Z400, KTM 390 Duke, Honda CB300R, and the BMW G310R. The Harley Streetfighter is expected to get an ex-showroom price tag of around INR 3.50-4.00 lakh.

The 2018 model of Kawasaki W175 is now available in Indonesia for IDR 31.0 million (INR 1.50 lakh approx). A younger cousin to Kawasaki W250, news for its launch as a sub 200cc motorcycle had surfaced many times before. Kawasaki once imported one unit of Estrella 250 into India for testing but no outcome of the same ever came for the Indian market. Cost cutting is one major reason for W175’s production as it is comes with a new 177cc, SOHC, single cylinder engine with carburetor for fuel supply. The engine is good for 13 HP at 7500 rpm and 13.2 Nm at 6000 rpm.

Kawasaki W175 Launched

Kawasaki W250 is powered by a quarter liter engine producing 18 HP and 18 Nm of torque. It uses fuel injection and gets a price tag of almost IDR 71.7 million (INR 3.50 lakh) in Indonesia. That equates to a bigger price when converted into actual Indian pricing and Kawasaki knows that success will stay far enough if they try going through this route. Kawasaki W175, on the other hand, will get a major price cut for the Indian market (when compared to W250). As the motorcycle arrives in Indonesia, the launch frame and possibility for India will move into positive sphere with full throttle.

As every motorcycle manufacturer is chasing the exclusivity of Royal Enfield in this segment, Kawasaki can even bring the cost effective variant to India for greater competition. The estimated cost in India would fall around INR 1.25 lakh. The price could have been much lower if W250 had existed before for India (part sharing in that case). The prices of motorcycles in India is always lower than that of Indonesia, except for CKD and CBU route products. W series comes with retro designing and highly refined motors, helping riders fulfill their dream of owning a motorcycle that looks classy and stays modern at the same time.

A recent report from BikeAdvice claims that Suzuki GZ150 is preparing for its Indian debut in the coming weeks. This report is backed by a dealer statement while estimated period for the launch is 60-90 days.

It is said that company engineers have asked them to prepare for this model and even Motul recently examined the GZ150 for India. In fact, if these things prove right, buyers will have an excellent option when looking for lightweight cruiser motorcycle before this festive season.

Suzuki GZ150 is currently on sale in Vietnam and Colombia. It comes with a 150cc, single cylinder fuel injected engine with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Here, using the engine from Gixxer can even help them keep cost under check.

Suzuki can swap the fuel injection with carburetor and further reduce the initial effective cost of GZ150. As it weighs 137 kg (dry), performance will definitely surprise the first time cruiser riders for sure. Suzuki offers a seat height of 710 mm for GZ150.

Sharing parts would not be a problem as it comes with conventional front forks and single front disc brake for the front section. However, using twin shocks and a different set of fuel tank, seats, exhaust and alloy wheels will need some time for localization.

Suzuki GZ150 costs 41,99,000 Peso (INR 89,000 approx) in Columbia. That makes it lower than Suzuki Gixxer at 43,99,000 Peso (INR 93,000). Both the bikes use fuel injection in Columbia and hence, Suzuki could place the same at around INR 85,000 in India for the carburetter model.

Key Specs of Suzuki GZ150

  • Displacement – 149.5cc, Air-Cooled
  • Maximum Power – 15.42 Bhp @ 8000 rpm
  • Maximum Torque – 11.20 Nm @ 6000 rpm
  • No. of Cylinders – 1
  • No. of Gears – 5
  • Seat Height – 710 mm
  • Ground Clearance – 150 mm
  • Dry Weight – 137 kg
  • Kerb/Wet Weight – 150 kg
  • Fuel Tank Capacity – 11.50 litres
