Mahindra eVerito Gets Price Cut in India: Joining the Tata Tigor EV’s recently reduced prices, Mahindra’s eVerito prices have also been slashed by the brand by INR 80,000. The price cuts have been offered to both the products in response to the 7% reduction in GST on electric vehicles. The new GST norms for electric vehicles came into effect on August 1, 2019.

In addition to this, the government’s FAME II subsidy on the commercial electric vehicles have made the Mahindra eVerito’s base D2 variant get a price tag of INR 10.71 lakhs. The prices for the other variants of Mahindra’s electric sedan that can be bought by the private users now stands at INR 13.70-14.20 lakh (on-road prices, New Delhi).

The FAME II subsidy offered by the government on the commercial electric compact vehicles is not eligible on the privately bought models of the Mahindra eVerito. Apart from the price reduction, all the specifications for the eVerito sedan remain the same.

Powering the eVerito is a 72-Volt lithium-ion battery pack capable of churning out a maximum power of 41.4HP and 91Nm of utmost torque. The company claimed top speed for the eVerito scales at 86 kmph while the brand has guaranteed 80 kmph top speed for the fleet variants. The electric sedan can be charged up to 80% in just 1 hour and 30 minutes via fast charging. The eVerito offers a maximum range of 110km (140km for the D2, D4 and D6 variants).

Commenting on the reduction in GST leading to the price cuts, Mahesh Babu, CEO Mahindra Electric stated “Mahindra will pass on the benefits to customers across our entire product range with immediate effect. This tax cut, along with the strong FAME II policy, will see the adoption rate in EV going up drastically with a boost to India’s last-and-first-mile mobility,”

Considering the recent cut in the GST for the electric vehicles, the prices for the Tata Tigor EV have been slashed by INR 80,000. The price tags for the Tata’s electric sedan now starts at INR 11.58 lakhs while goes all the way up to INR 11.92 lakhs for the top-spec variant.

The Tata Tigor EV can now be availed in the market in three variants namely: XE, XM and XT. If we include the Government’s FAME II subsidy, it offers a further price cut of INR 1.62 lakh on all the variants, and the prices for the electric Tigor will range between INR 9.96 lakh for the base XE variant, going all the way up to INR 10.30 lakhs for the highest-spec XT model. The prices mentioned here exclude TCS (1% tax levied on cars that cost above Rs 10 lakhs). Here is the new price list of Tata Tigor EV after the recent price cuts:

Without FAME II subsidies

  • Old Price: INR 12.35-12.71 lakh
  • New Price: INR 11.58-11.92 lakh

With FAME II subsidies

  • Old Price: INR 10.99-11.09 lakh
  • New Price: INR 9.96-10.30 lakh

Apart from the price cuts, the Tata Tigor EV remains all the same. Being currently available as a commercial vehicle only, the brand is also planning on launching the updated Tigor EV at the Auto Expo 2020, which will be made available to a larger chunk of audience.

The XM and XT variants of the Tata Tigor EV can be further differentiated on the basis of the level of kit offered on both the models. The XT variant of the electric sedan has been equipped with 14-inch alloy wheels as well as power-adjustable wing mirrors while these features have been given a miss on the XM variant.

The brand has equipped both the XT and XM variants of the Tata Tigor EV with a standard safety kit that includes ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, dual front airbags, seat belt reminders and more. The base variant XE, however, lacks these features.

Powering the Tata Tigor EV is the 16.2kWh battery, and the brand has mated the battery pack with a 72V, 3-phase AC induction motor, capable of generating maximum power of 41HP (30kW) at 4,500 rpm and 105 Nm of peak torque at 2,500 rpm. The company-claimed range of the Tigor EV stands at 142km on a single charge of the battery. The battery can charge up to 80% in just 6 hours via a standard AC socket.

South Korea’s biggest conglomerate Hyundai launched Kona Electric on July 9, 2019, in the Indian market. No sooner, the Kona SUV has been booked by 120 customers within 10 days of its announcement. If believed the sources then a request of 10,000 test drives were recorded.

The huge demand for the product within such a short period must have been satisfying for the company. Kona is an all-electric SUV and a first-of-its-kind product in India. The Korean company has made its best efforts to keep the price range as affordable as possible which is why the SUV is available at 25.30 lakhs (ex-showroom). This exciting price tag was made possible after the company decided to assemble Kona locally in India.

National Sales Head, Vikas Jain, Hyundai Motors India stated that the Indian crowd is excited to try hands-on this new launch which is clear by the number of requests placed by people for not just to buy it but also to test drive it.

Breaking the norms of traditional looks offered by other EVs, Hyundai designed the Kona absolutely alluring. The SUV is available in a wide range of four colours which is Phantom Black, Polar White, Marina Blue and Typhoon Silver integrated with an athletic build. Tested by the leading R&D organisation ARAI, the product had a range of 452 km with a one-time charge.

The Hyundai Kona Electric is equipped with 39.2kWh battery. The battery gets 0-80% charge within 57min to be precise which is possible due to the 50 kW DC charger. Whereas the same task with some ordinary 3 pin charger can take 19 hours. Kona’s motor has a power of 136HP and a peak torque of 395 Nm. The motor is capable enough to speed up the front wheels with a single-speed automatic gearbox that enables Hyundai’s Kona to cover 0-100 kph within a time-bound of 9.7 seconds pretty easy.

Some of the key features of the Kona Electric include a split-type head-lamp setup, LED DRLs, sunproof, keyless entry and exit, automatic climate control options, ventilated front seats, digital instrument cluster along with a huge 7-inch display, fit for entertainment and information purpose.

You can totally rely on the safety features of the SUV as it is packed with six airbags, ABS brakes, electronic stability control, hill-start assist and rear parking sensors and cameras placed to ensure it. The product has been successful in leaving a trail on the international market with an impressive 15,000 sales number. A total of 15 dealers in 11 Indian cities have agreed to retail the Kona.

Speculations are there that if a reduction in GST on EVs became successful then the customers can be befitted by a price drop of INR 1.40 lakh from the current price tag. The Korean conglomerate is said to be on a hunt of providing an affordable EV to the Indian market.

Bolt Mobility has already launched electric mini-scooters that offer a range of up to 3.21 kilometres. For those who are imagining a full-sized two-wheeler here, the Bolt e-scooters are like the scooters used by kids that they swing with one leg and then keep both the feet on the board to roll freely.

The ride-sharing concept behind the Bolt Nano electric car makes it good for everyday use by hundreds of persons. Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch its first small electric car in 2020. It will most likely make an official debut at the Auto Expo in February next year. The upcoming car will be based on the new generation model of Japan-spec WagonR. As the world is shifting its focus away from ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) powered vehicles to EVs (Electric Vehicles), Maruti Suzuki believes that India is not yet ready for full-scale electric passenger cars.

The brand recently also announced that they are going to stop selling diesel cars in India starting from April next year. All this is happening because last year in October the Supreme Court announced that by April 1, 2020, all the automobile manufacturers have to adopt BSVI emission norms. Bharat Stage VI (BS6) norms are two stages ahead of the present Bharat Stage IV norms in regulating emissions.

These norms are the standards instituted by the government to regulate the emission of air pollutants from motor vehicles. The amount of Sulphur is the major difference between BSIV and BSVI norms. BSIV fuels contain 50ppm sulphur while BSVI grade fuel only has 10ppm of sulphur. Making the cars BSVI-compliant will require very high investment in research and development to upgrade the engines.

India’s leading carmaker Maruti Suzuki has raised some serious concerns regarding the adaptability to electric vehicles and commented that in the current regulatory regime, even a small petrol car like WagonR which starts from INR 4.30 lakhs would cost up to INR 12 lakhs in its all-electric avatar. That’s a lot of amount for a car of WagonR’s size.

The price of a small EV could go beyond the reach of small car owners. Also, a proper infrastructure is also required to charge the car as most of the people in India park their cars outside their house so it would not be possible for them to charge the car.

Maruti Suzuki recently unveiled the prototype of their upcoming WagonR EV and they also had put around 50 units on test on the Indian roads. So it would be interesting to see that in the near future how the scenario of the upcoming electric cars would change and how many people would be ready to own an all-electric car in India.

Note: The Images of Next-Gen Suzuki WagonR used in the article are for representational purpose only. The exterior and interior design of the first small electric car by Maruti Suzuki is expected to based on the new Japan-spec WagonR.

Renault has officially revealed their Kwid-based small electric car, the City K-ZE at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show. The electric vehicle is based on the underpinning of the standard Kwid hatchback while getting an electric powertrain with NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) range of 250 km. A 220V domestic socket is required for charging the all-new electric vehicle by Renault though it requires 4 hours for full charging. The brand also offers a faster charging option which allows the battery level to reach 80% in just a duration of 50 minutes.

Getting the same wheelbase of 2423mm as that of conventional Renault Kwid, the City K-ZE offers 300 litres of storage space while the ground clearance stands at 150mm. Coming to the feature specifications, the Renault City K-ZE gets an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports online navigation, online entertainment, real-time car monitoring based on the application data as well as smart voice recognition and Wi-Fi. In addition to these, certain other features like rear parking camera, tyre pressure monitoring system can also be availed with the electric car.

Borrowing the design language of standard Renault Kwid, the City K-ZE gets a refurbished front profile with split headlamp design with LED DRLs as well as a redesigned front grille with U-shaped inserts. The City K-ZE also features dual tone alloy wheels unlike the regular KWID whereas the side profile remains the same. At the rear, the electric vehicle features restyled LED tail lamps as well as a dual tone rear bumper. The black interior with blue trim offers it a premium look while the sensors in the cabin can adjust the air quality accordingly.

The Renault KWID City K-ZE will be launching in China by the end of the year though being a global product, the Indian market can also expect to see the electric vehicle sooner than ever. If and whenever launched in India, the City K-ZE is expected to get a price tag lesser than INR 10 lakhs.

At the MOVE Summit in New Delhi, Maruti Suzuki has displayed a prototype electric vehicle, calling it a prototype EV but not mentioning its production name. However, when compared, the vehicle has similar styling to the Japanese-spec WagonR, which makes it quite a safe bet that it will have the same or similar styling and features in the production model as well. The vehicle that was showcased has quite a few styling similarities to the WagonR that we see in India. The basic body type is the same while there are some changes to the actual design, which is why it will most probably be an electric WagonR.

There are split headlamps up at the front, and while there is no actual combustion engine, there is a huge two-part grille too, which dominates the front fascia. The grille is continued on the front bumper as well, and it is at the sides where the biggest change factors in. The B-pillar is body coloured, dividing the car into two halves with quite a style. At the base, the pillar is thicker than it is at the top. This is brought about by slashing into the rear glass window. Another difference in the side fascia is the placement of the wing mirrors, which now sit on the door instead of the pillar. At the rear, there are sunken tail lights just above the rear bumper and an overall clean look.

The expected launch of the electric WagonR is around April 2020 but Maruti Suzuki has not yet revealed any specifications about the car on the production model that will come to India. As far as the price of the electric WagonR is concerned, the company had stated earlier that it would cost nearly twice as much as the standard model and it has not deviated from that statement yet. There is no information about the sources of the components for the electric WagonR. However, the test vehicle that has been made and showcased was manufactured at the Gurugram plant of the company. The vehicle will be tested on the Indian roads for a true evaluation of the real-life conditions, to get an accurate idea about the range and the cost of running.

Mercedes-Benz EQC, an all-wheel-drive electric SUV from the German manufacturer, is now official. The US market will receive this 402hp green machine in 2020, warning the electric giant Tesla of its arrival in advance. The car is a production version of two-year-old concept from Paris Motor Show, flaunting 200 miles (321.9 km) of overall range on one full charge. Mercedes EQC was unveiled at an official company event in Sweden, with the company revealing complete plans for its worldwide debut. The production starts in Germany in 2019, further moving to China and the US in a phased manner.

Mercedes-Benz EQC
Mercedes-Benz EQC Electric SUV Officially Unveiled

Mercedes EQC can get around 280 miles of range with the NEC testing standards of Europe but, that won’t be practical in comparison to the EPA figures for the US market. They even revealed that fast chargers can help the driver get 70 percent of battery in just 40 minutes. The upcoming all-electric variant comes with two 10.25-inch displays with MBUX infotainment system and impressive user interface. Adaptive headlights, heated seats, 19-inch alloy wheels and one motor on each axle comes as standard. The car is expected to deliver 0-100 kph in just 4.9 seconds.

Mercedes is offering EQC with a top speed of 112 mph (180 kph), lower than generally listed top speeds of over 200 kph for most SUVs. The rivals in this segment include Tesla Model X, Jaguar I-Pace, upcoming Audi E-Tron and BMW iX3. Mercedes is expected to place the electric SUV under $69,500 (INR 49.86 lakh approx, without taxes) worth price tag of the i-Pace. Electric power is the future of the automotive market and most brands have understood this with prototypes ready for testing. Not just the luxury brands but, even Ford, Hyundai and Volkswagen are working hard on it.
