Hero Electric Motorcycle Spotted Ahead of Official Unveil: Hero Electric is one of the largest electric two-wheeler manufacturers and is currently planning to launch its first-ever electric motorcycle at the upcoming Auto Expo 2020. The brand currently offers 5 electric scooters in its portfolio that offer a decent range as well as higher speeds. The upcoming motorcycle from the brand has been recently revealed in a new set of spy shots.

Though the Hero Electric motorcycle has been neatly draped to hide its overall look, some parts of it are still visible and give an interesting insight on what to expect from the new “green” machine. The brand has offered the motorcycle with a hawkish street bike look with the addition of a bulky fuel tank design with an upswept tail section flowing towards the back. In addition to this, the electric motorcycle has been equipped with a split seat design while the handlebar unit has been offered a wider stance.

The overall red colour scheme offered to the upcoming electric motorcycle further imparts it a sporty look while the knobby tyres accentuate its profile. The company claimed top speed of the Hero Electric motorcycle is expected to limit at 80kmph while the battery is expected to offer a range of 120km on a full charge. There has been no information revealed on the exact battery and motor specifications of the electric motorcycle though one can expect it to feature an IP67 rated lithium-ion battery.

The spy shots of the motorcycle confirm USD forks at the front while the rear suspension will be handled by a monoshock absorber. The motorcycle is expected to feature disc brakes at either side. The upcoming bike from Hero Electric will be equipped with a complete LED headlight and taillight setup while the brand is expected to offer Bluetooth connectivity on an all-digital instrument console.

The Hero Electric motorcycle is expected to be priced around INR 1.50 lakh (ex-showroom). Once launched in India, the motorcycle will compete with the likes of Revolt RV 400.

As per the recent updates, Hero Electric has decided to go ahead with its planned investment under the capacity expansion programme even though a slowdown in demand has been experienced in the domestic market.

The Managing Director of Hero Electric, Naveen Munjal, told Economic Times in an interview that although the demand for the electric vehicles was subdued in the first half of the ongoing financial year, the company is hopeful about witnessing a pickup in demand with the legacy player such as Bajaj Autos entering the segment.

The brand notified about its plans to invest INR 700 crores in the coming three years in order to be able to develop new products, expand dealer network and increase production capacity to retain a leadership position in the segment. They also reported that the resources will be raised through a mix of internal accruals and external capital.

The Managing director said in his statement, “To start off, the first few months were kind of slow because of the new policies which came into play… the new homologation norms (under Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India or FAME-II scheme). But now we are back on track. We will grow (over last financial year)”.

He explained that the entry of Bajaj Autos in the segment is a positive signal. He added to his statement by saying“Larger players coming means that the time has come, or is coming, for the internal combustion engine (ICE) two-wheelers to start converting. When you talk of ICE converting, you are looking at 20 million units converting over a period of time. Now it is anybody’s guess whether it will happen in five or 10 years but the market will start to expand very, very quickly.”

Around 52,000 electric two-wheelers were sold in India between the month of April and September this year and Hero Electric accounted for nearly half the sales.

A Family Settlement Agreement that happened in the Munjal family has landed Hero MotoCorp into a situation where it has been restricted from selling its electric scooters and bikes under one of the most trusted brand names – Hero. Formerly known as Hero Honda, it is the largest two-wheeler manufacturer, therefore, has an empire worth multi-billion dollars comprising of various business verticals. These verticals have now been divided between the family members that come under a family pact that was finalised in 2010.

As a result of the split, the company may have to drop the Hero brand name and come up with a new brand name for its electric two-wheelers that will shortly arrive in the market. This Family Settlement restricts Pawan Munjal, who is the chairman and promoter of Hero MotoCorp from using the brand name as the rights of it rest with Naveen Munjal who is the promoter and managing director of Hero Electric Vehicles Pvt. Ltd.

Not just Pawan Munjal, even other members of the Munjal family have been restricted from using the Hero brand name. Hero MotoCorp is in the process of manufacturing electric scooters but has not yet disclosed anything about the launch.

The company is looking forward to bringing new products that will be engineered according to the new technology but not under the brand name Hero. As per the recent reports, the company will not change its dealership to sell their electric products, even if it has to change its brand name.

Due to new and stricter rules, Hero Electric has experienced a dip in sales. These new laws ensure that the prices of eco-friendly vehicles should be low as these avail subsidiaries under the FAME Scheme. Although using a new brand name may prove to be an obstacle for the company, Hero MotoCorp feels that it is also a great opportunity for the launch of its electric two-wheelers as it will help in growing its customer base.
