According to a recent report by TOI, Honda 2-Wheelers said that they are open to collaborate with their rivals to work on e-scooters in India. The Japanese two-wheeler giant had already stated that they have no plans to enter the electric two-wheeler market before 2020.

The president and CEO of HMSI (Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India), Minoru Kato said that the collaboration with other brands is possible in areas such as electric vehicles, battery swapping, and perhaps the charging infrastructure.

He also said that there is no concrete discussion that has been initiated. They are yet to make any formal proposal. When asked about the Niti Aayog’s proposal to mandate only electric 2-wheelers in the sub-150cc category from 2025, the CEO said that 2025 is too early to go 100% electric.

Honda would be the first company to take an initiative where a two-wheeler maker is willing to partner its rivals to tackle the challenges related to the development of electric vehicles and the charging infrastructure. Previously in the Japanese market, brands like Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Suzuki also decided to collaborate in the field of electric vehicles and battery swapping technology.

The chairman of TVS Motor, Mr Venu Srinivasan recently said that the unrealistic deadline for the mass adoption of electric 2-wheelers in India may create consumer discontent and will risk derailing auto manufacturing that supports four million jobs. Also, Niti Aayog has been criticised by these leading two-wheeler companies such as Bajaj Auto, Hero MotoCorp, and TVS Motor over their proposal. The brands have termed it ‘unrealistic’ and ‘ill-timed’ as it comes at the peak time when the industry is preparing for BS6 emission norms.

Recently, Honda 2-Wheelers India launched its first BS6-compliant scooter which gets fuel-injection as standard. The upgraded model of the Activa 125 Fi comes with a much-advanced instrument console which displays lots of helpful information such as real-time mileage and distance to empty. The pre-bookings are open and the scooter will go on sale in September 2019. It will be available in six shades and is expected to be priced around INR 65,000 (ex-showroom).

Honda has filed a series of patents in Japan for a new technology that will allow the rider to adjust the riding position of the motorcycle. The new system will offer two riding positions for the same motorcycle, an aggressive riding position as well as a relaxed riding mode. Honda is the second company to come up with this plan after Yamaha though, the latter was unsuccessful in its quest. The technology designed by Honda does look promising and has a simpler design which can be used for commercial motorcycles in the future.

Adjustable Riding Position Technology
Honda Files Patent for Adjustable Riding Position Technology for Bikes

The patent images show Honda CBR1000RR and exhibit a system that adjusts the handlebar as well as the windscreen. Extended tubes that run parallel with the fork legs are attached to the handlebars that allow them to rise to an extended position from the normal height. The system will feature a single button actuator for automatically adjusting the handlebar.

Similarly, the windscreen of the motorcycle can be adjusted via the same mechanism. Also, the multiple rivet points on the windscreen allow it to move backwards and forward in addition to the conventional up and down positions.

Both the windscreen and the handlebar are attached to the same controller making them adjustable with the single button simultaneously. The scissor style frame allows the rider to move the windscreen upward and in a vertical position so as to get a relaxed riding mode for touring long distances.

According to the reports, if the brand gets the patent, they are most likely to introduce the technology on the Honda Gold Wing or any other sports tourer with very thin possibilities of equipping superbike like Honda Fireblade with the same. The brand is expected to showcase the motorcycle with the supposed technology sometime in the next year.

The brand-wise sales report for March 2019 brings reshuffling of positions that were earlier assumed to be the same throughout the year. The first position has been bagged by Hero Motocorp with 5,53,302 units, registering a drop of 21.5% in the YoY number. The second position now goes to TVS Motor, taking away the spot from none other than Honda by getting approx 25,000 units more than the Japanese rival. TVS registered 2,47,710 units while Honda was good for 2,22,325 units in March 2019. Both the brands saw a drop in sales as TVS got 6.6% negative growth while Honda was the worst hit brand with 46.7% drop in YoY sales number.

Bajaj Auto could have got the third position too as they got 2,20,213 units during the 31-day period. The difference of approx 2,000 units could have been bridged easily if they had officially announced the arrival of new Dominar than letting fans enjoy the test reviews and spy shots. The first four brands have their own league like no other option in India, or even the remaining brands combined can cross any of the above-listed names. Yamaha is good for the fifth position with 72,676 units. The majority of sales number from Yamaha comes from motorcycles.

Honda CBR650F

Suzuki India bagged the sixth position with 58,696 units. They are riding on the success of Access 125 and Burgman Street while motorcycle contributes a very small chunk of their sales number in India. Both these Japanese brands dethroned Royal Enfield from its earlier position, leaving the same with just a small gap from Suzuki. The 58,434 units from Royal Enfield is still a very lucrative number. Piaggio Vespa (including Aprilia) is the last mass-market brand with a four-digit sales number. They were good for 6221 units and all of them were scooters.

New Kawasaki Ninja 300

Kawasaki got 467 units in March 2019 while Mahindra got just 337 units during the same period. Harley-Davidson and Triumph were the next two brands with 205 and 65 units respectively. The units from Bajaj Auto includes KTM numbers while Ducati and rest of the 2-wheeler brands do not reveal their sales number.

Hero MotoCorp and HMSI (Honda 2-Wheelers) registered a massive drop in sales for the month of March 2019, wiping almost 3.5 lakh units from the sales chart in the 31-day period. The positions reshuffled for the first time in the last few years and drop in numbers are heartbreaking for the motorcycle/scooter fans of the country. Hero registered 5,53,302 units in March 2019. The number is massive in itself while one year ago, the brand was good for 7,04,874 units. The YoY drop is 21.5% for India’s highest selling motorcycle brand.

Honda, which was already seen as the biggest nightmare of Hero MotoCorp, got the worst hit ever with just 2,22,325 units in March 2019. The brand was earlier good for 4,17,380 units, clearly taking away 46.7% of the number in the YoY sales chart. This has made Honda the third largest brand instead of the second slot that it had from a long time with its brilliant Indian product lineup. As per the sales report of March 2019, TVS Motor is now the 2nd best-selling 2-wheeler brand in India.

Hero and Honda benefit from the popular Splendor (HF Deluxe too) and Activa brand names, with these counting almost half of their sales number in an average month. The focus of both the brands on the 100-125cc segment has made them the dominating duo for the commuter segment. Hero benefits from the lower than average price tags while Honda offers impressive engine options with reliability being the key point in both the decade-old rivals.

The presence of Honda Unicorn in the 150cc segment is prominent for sure while Hero recently entered the 200cc segment with the Xtreme 200R for some fair sales chunk. Both the bikes are definitely not the highest selling options of these sections as Bajaj and TVS are known to deliver the most effective bikes here.

Honda 2-Wheelers India registered 3,94,246 units in November 2018. The fall in sales was quite visible at 8.8%, leaving Honda struggling with the number of scooters sold during the 30-day period. The most effective product, Honda Activa, also failed to win over its archrival Splendor. The downfall is clearly visible with the Cliq and Navi, with the latter posting just 1 unit in sales and hinting at an unexpected halt in production. The Honda Shine saves motorcycle segment with 70,803 units in sales while Dream and Unicorn series further added bulk to the number by fetching 16,734 and 23,402 units respectively.

Honda will soon launch the new CBR650R in India to Replace the CBR650F Sport Bike

The most powerful motorcycle on offer is Honda CBR250R in the local production and CBR1000R in the CBU section. Unfortunately, only Africa Twin was able to bring 4 units in the CBU section sales. Honda is India’s second largest brand by sales volume but their decline in sales made them closer to the number posted by TVS Motors than Hero Motocorp. Honda Dio is one bestseller with 38,484 units while the drop in sales was also visible for Livo 110, xBlade 160 and CB Hornet 160R. The Unicorn 160 posted zero sales for November 2018.

Honda 2-Wheelers recently jumped the 4 Crore sales landmark in India. The brand is definitely the quickest to achieve this milestone. The 1 Crore figure took 11 years to arrive while 2 Crore was achieved in the next three years. The speed of progress was so fast that next 2 Crore units were scored in just four years.

Honda is India’s second largest brand by volume and three products (Activa, CB Shine, and Unicorn) established them as a market leader in their first 11 years of existence. These three are still the highest selling products (including both bikes and scooters) in the company lineup, with other product joining them one after the other.

Honda Activa 5G

Honda made progress by introducing commuter motorcycles like Dream and Livo series to target customers from the highest selling motorcycle segment. The popularity of CB Shine has helped the brand claim almost 10 lakh units every year for the 125cc motorcycle.

On the other hand, Honda Activa counts for more than 50% of the total 4 Crore figure. In comparison to Honda, Hero Motocorp has achieved 8 Crore sales benchmark but did the same in 33 years of existence. Both the brands focus on everyday products while Honda also specializes in superbikes like CBR1000RR, Africa Twin, CB1000R+ and the six-cylinder Goldwing.

Minoru Kato, president and CEO – Honda 2-Wheelers India said, “We are honoured by the love and trust that 40 million customers have bestowed on brand Honda in such a short time. Since the very start, Honda is led by a challenging spirit bringing Joy to millions of customers with high-quality innovative products.”

Yadvinder Singh Guleria, senior vice president – Sales & Marketing, Honda 2-Wheelers India said, “Honda 2Wheelers India is proud to power every flight on wings for more than 40 million two-wheeler riders. With an extensive range of scooters & motorcycles, rapidly expanding network, adding customer friendly services, Honda is all set to further delight its customers in pursuit of their dreams.”

The scooter market is also dominated by Honda Dio, Grazia, and Aviator, with Cliq and Navi under-performing for their price tags. Unlike Hero, Honda is more scooter oriented with a bigger number on the gearless side.

In motorcycles, the Honda CB Shine, along with Dream, Unicorn, and Livo, brings the majority of sales into the brand. The xBlade and CB Hornet are two best-selling products of their respective segment too. As seen with Navi, Honda CBR250R has a sudden fall in numbers when compared to all other products in the lineup. Honda CBR650F is the most selling sportbike with 12 units in one month while Goldwing and Africa Twin were good for 7 and 5 units respectively. All the products collectively registered 5,77,249 units in August 2018.

Honda scored the second position among top-selling brands, staying behind just Hero MotoCorp with a marginal gap. The rising popularity of CB Shine and Dream Series can bring them even bigger numbers in the coming months. Majority of Honda products will get CBS in the coming months.

Updated Honda 2-Wheelers On-Road Price List: The on-road pricing for the entire two-wheeler market went up with the decision of 5-year mandatory insurance with the purchase of a brand new product. Honda, India’s second most selling two-wheeler brand, has most of its products fall under the decent brackets, attracting a digestible third-party premium on all of the bikes and scooters. The most expensive product, CBR250R, had a difference of INR 7500 from the old amount. Activa, the most selling scooter in India, now requires the buyer to invest INR 4000 more for a longer insurance term. Getting a zero depreciation insurance policy will cost quite a lot more for premium products while scooters will not attract that huge amount.

Honda 2-Wheelers On-Road Price List

Honda 2-Wheelers currently retails products ranging from Cliq to CBR250R in their local production lineup. The difference in pricing for insurance policies will be loud for superbikes and other premium products like Honda Africa Twin. Buyers will need to spend a lot more than usual or rest with basic third-party protection, out of which, latter is not a good idea for such expensive products. Honda Unicorn 160 carries a 162.7cc engine, attracting more insurance premium than CB Unicorn 150 with a smaller 149cc engine. Those falling under the 150cc segment, whether it be a scooter or a motorcycle, brings the lowest possible amount from other products like Hornet and CBR250R.
