Aprilia GPR 150 vs Honda CBR150R (Quick Comparison): Aprilia GPR 150 and Honda CBR150R are two impressive lightweight racers that the Indian market can get in 2020. The former was spotted in India a few months ago at a dealer event, hinting that Aprilia is planning to enter the popular 150cc motorcycle segment as early as possible.

In terms of looks, the Aprilia GPR 150 is different in comparison to the model (RS 150) showcased at the Auto Expo 2018, as it is based on a China-spec 150cc Aprilia sportbike. Honda CBR150R is yet to make an official entry into India, either through a test mule or a model that can be showcased to the dealers to gauge the response.

The performance values of both the bikes are highly comparable, with CBR getting benefits of its lightweight body while GPR 150 bringing higher overall power output. The tyre size, rear brake size, and 2-channel ABS stay same on both the models. The torque output is higher on the CBR150R. Here is a quick comparison between Aprilia GPR 150 and the Honda CBR150R.

Yamaha R15 V3 vs Honda CBR150R (Quick Comparison): Yamaha YZF-R15 Version 3.0 and the new Honda CBR150R are the closest possible rivals for 150cc premium performance segment. The R15 V3 made its official debut in India at the Auto Expo 2018 while the new CBR150R is still under the expected list of products for the Indian market. Honda has a great chance here as they could revive the CBR150R in India and bring some real competition to similarly priced bikes.

As the Yamaha R15 V3 is now available with ABS and priced at INR 1.40 lakh (ex-showroom), one can expect Honda to place the new model of the CBR150R ABS slightly lower for better competition. Honda has brought the quarter-litre CBR250R back and thus, the chances of CBR150R’s revival are now higher than ever.

We are not sure whether Honda CBR150R will launch in India or not. If it comes at the right time, buyers are suggested to choose one of them according to their needs. Strict speed lovers who ride once a month on track should blindly go for the Yamaha R15 V3 while those who ride for the leisurely purpose should consider the Honda CBR150R as it offers the best power-to-weight ratio in the everyday rpm range. Pricing will further decide the fate of CBR150R in India as higher displacement products are available at impressive prices.

The new Honda CBR150R ABS was launched last year in Indonesia, hinting that the product seems ready for the launch in India this year. However, the launch feels uncertain as Honda has revealed no plans to work on premium lightweight products for the country.

At present, the brand’s focus is on volume-generating products like the Activa and CB Shine series. We feel that Honda must bring the new CBR150R to compete with the R15 V3 in India. Yamaha is posting huge sales figures every month proving that buyers in India do have an interest in buying a premium and expensive 150cc bike.

2019 Honda CBR150R MotoGP Edition

As the government made ABS mandatory for bikes above 150cc displacement from April 1, 2018, the plans for the youngest CBR were on hold due to non-availability of dual channel ABS last year. However, Honda offers dual-channel ABS on CBR250R and single-channel unit on the Hornet. Still, rather than calibrating the unit to match the disc brake sizes on the CBR150R with the old design, it seems effective for the brand to bring the entire kit here and localize the new model in India.

CBR150R ABS is now available in Indonesia in Matte Black, Victory Black Red, Honda Racing Red, and the popular MotoGP Edition. The motorcycle comes with an impressive windscreen, sharp front headlight design, balanced fairing, split seat, and black exhaust. The MotoGP Edition comes with orange alloy wheels while all other shades feature black wheels as standard. The ABS ring is clearly seen on the front brake, with Honda using the ABS sticker on the front fender for further confirmation. The 150cc, single cylinder engine on the bike is good for 17.1 HP of maximum power and 14.4 NM of torque.

The motorcycle also features emergency brake warning which activates hazard lights in tough situations. The launch of CBR in India will pose a direct threat to Yamaha R15 V3, which has stayed undisputed from the first day of its launch. The pricing for the new CBR150R will stay under INR 1.40 lakh (if launched), leaving a chance for no special variant for the lightweight racer for India.

As of now, Honda has no plans to launch the new model of CBR150R in India.

2019 Honda CBR150R is now official for the Thailand market at 99,000 baht (INR 2.15 lakh approx). The motorcycle features dual-channel ABS and proves itself as the worthy competitor to the Yamaha R15 V3. The powerful motorcycle is available with conventional forks as standard, keeping the cost already under control for the Thai market. However, the biggest benefit Honda could receive from the decent component list will be visible once they plan to bring the 2019 CBR150R to India. The plans are not yet official but, considering their venture into the 300cc segment, the lightweight league (including the new CB150R) stands a chance in the country.

2019 Honda CBR150R
2019 Honda CBR150R Sports Bike

For the Thai market, the motorcycle can be had in Black and Blue/Black shade for the non-ABS and Red/Black as well as Repsol Edition finish for the ABS variant. The front features two impressive LED lights that are inspired by the bigger CBR650R while the full-digital instrument console with impressive visibility raises the level of sophistication for the brand. The front and rear suspension are adjustable, bringing the custom level ride to the most lightweight possible CBR machine for present-gen riders. The engine on the 2019 Honda CBR150R is similar in configuration to the CB150R Streetster.

The exhaust muffler features Kevlar protection while 166mm of ground clearance makes the motorcycle practical for everyday use. For the Indian market, the new CBR150R could prove its worth through these impressive segment-first features. However, the pricing must undercut the new Yamaha R15 V3, which is at present available with an ex-showroom price tag of INR 1,39,350.

CBR150R Matte Orange Edition by Stealth Wraps: Honda CBR150R was discontinued in India a long time back but still, it lives through the present day design of the CBR250R. Stealth Wraps have worked on one such example and finished this now exclusive machine in a tangy shade of Orange. The ‘Matte Chrome Orange Wrap‘ gets White and Golden highlights with iicon graphics on its side profile while the front fender gets twin stripes running over the Orange surface. Front halogen headlight has been replaced with projector headlight with LED outer ring while no changes were made into its taillight and side indicators. Mechanically, no changes were made to this motorcycle at all.

The India-spec Honda CBR150R was powered by a 149.4cc, single cylinder engine producing 18.28 BHP at 10,500 rpm and 12.66 Nm at 8,500 rpm. The power value was class leading for its time as Yamaha R15 V2 produced just 16.8 BHP in comparison. Lack of decent torque sometimes made heavy riders feel miserable when looking for instant acceleration. It weighs 138 kg in stock condition. When it was last retailed before April 2017, Honda offered Sports Red, Jazzy Blue Metallic and Candy palm Green shade. That makes this orange shade even more special as it helps the motorcycle gain exclusivity for sure.

New Honda CBR150R is undoubtedly a quality benchmark for the lightweight segment. You can hear people telling tales about their long drives on the old-gen model, returning even more energized than they were at the start and the new one is simply a level higher than all that has been heard for the Indian version.

The factor that pulled it back was the use of old VFR inspired design, and only Honda knows why the brand preferred halting the production and not bringing in the next generation model of CBR150R to India. Here are five reasons why the New Honda CBR150R should be launched in India.

5 Reasons Why New Honda CBR150R Should be Launched in India

1) Impressive & Next-Gen Design: The design language of the new bike is far more impressive than the old generation CBR150R. It now uses LED lights, sharp front fascia and a very competitive design in the 150cc segment. Chances of launching the 2019 CBR250R under the same design is also a possibility.

2) Better Performance & Features: The drive quality on the next generation model has been improved by using a better fairing. New Honda CBR150R even offers a better balance in power and torque while the use of LED lights and better brakes makes it even better than before. The interest of buyers for the old CBR150R fell largely due to better bikes being introduced in the same segment that even carries better technology in comparison to the discontinued CBR.

New Honda CBR150R Specs

  • Displacement – 149.16 cc
  • Maximum Power – 17.1 HP @ 9000 rpm
  • Maximum Torque – 14.4 NM @ 7000 rpm
  • Number of Cylinders – 1
  • Number of Gears – 6
  • Seat Height – 787 mm
  • Ground Clearance – 166 mm
  • Kerb/Wet Weight – 135 kg
  • Fuel Tank Capacity – 12 litres
  • Top Speed – 135 kmph (Approx.)

3) Honda Losing Premium Market Share in India: Honda presently exist right till Hornet 160R and then completely vanishes from the lightweight premium market. The large gap that can be felt from INR 1 lakh has helped rivals place products with much ease, taking away the bunch of sales that were once in the hands of Honda products. The old Honda CBR150R was not capable of breaking into the sales of Yamaha R15 in the last few years.

4) Better to Invest on Localization of New Models: Investing more money into an already slow-selling product is worth nothing while getting the new design and localizing it to a good extent can promise better results for the next few years. Most brands have moved the old products as they were not willing to invest more in BS4 upgrades. Honda could do the same and bring a new engine with better economy and performance than ever. This investment could be the biggest negative for rivals as their future products will not have easy access to product slots in the Indian market.

5) Best Time to Gain Popularity & Make Fans Happy: As many queries regarding the new CBR150R arise every day, Honda should hit the right spot. As the brand went forward for CB300R with a higher priority, the New CBR150R should be placed next in order to get the maximum benefits from the popularity point of view.

The maximum number of sales in the above INR 1.25 lakh segment comes from the popularity of the product among the buyers. We feel that this is the right time for Honda to launch the latest CBR150R in India if they want to survive in the INR 1 lakh to INR 2 lakh price segment.

Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 and the new Honda CBR150R are the closest possible rivals for 150cc premium performance segment. The R15 V3 made its official debut in India @ Auto Expo 2018 while the new CBR150R is still under the expected list of products for India. Honda has a great chance here as they could revive the CBR150R in India and bring some real competition to similarly priced bikes.

India-Spec Yamaha R15 V3

As Yamaha R15 V3 has been priced at INR 1.27 lakh (ex-showroom), one can expect Honda to place this interesting CBR150R slightly lower for better competition. Honda has brought the quarter-liter CBR250R back and thus, chances of CBR150R’s revival are now an all-time high.

# Design & Style

This section is more of a personal choice but one can see that Honda CBR150R is more road-friendly in nature. R15 is inspired from bigger R series bikes and thus, hunger to take on a track is clearly seen in its design. Shade options on CBR150R include Red, Black, White and MotoGP inspired Orange while R15 V3 is available in Racing Blue and Thunder Gray shade in India. The latter is available with every dealer while exact time frame is not mentioned by Honda.

# Engine & Performance

The last generation CBR150R was more powerful than R15 V2 but this story takes a turn with R15 Version 3.0. It is definitely more powerful than any other existing road legal 150cc bike around the globe. R15 V3 develops max. power and max. torque of 19.3 HP @ 10,000 rpm and 15 Nm @ 8500 rpm respectively. CBR150R, on the other hand, comes with 17.1 HP @ 9000 rpm and 14.4 NM @ 7000 rpm of torque. It weighs 4 kg less in comparison to 139 kg wet weight of R15 V3. More or less, it requires an experienced rider to beat R15 V3 while riding the New CBR150R.

# Equipment Comparison

R15 V3 comes with LED lights, telescopic suspension and dual disc brakes without ABS while CBR150R also has the same sort of equipment options. Disc brakes on R15 are bigger and same could also be said for a 140/70-17 rear wheel of R15 V3. CBR150R comes with better rider seat height as average Indian rider will never need to struggle for a full feet touch. R15 Version 3.0 comes with 815 mm of seat height and thus, many will leave the idea of buying due to a higher placed seat.

# Instrument Console

Yamaha R15 V3 comes with a white back-lit display that offers gear indicator, odometer, speedometer and other options while CBR150R comes with a blue back-lit digital console with an almost same number of features and different positioning of elements. Both bikes were earlier offered with analog-digital consoles.

# Verdict

We are not sure whether Honda CBR150R will launch in India or not. If it comes at the right time, buyers are suggested to choose one of them according to their needs. Strict speed lovers who ride once a week on track should blindly go for R15 V3. Those who ride for the leisurely purpose should consider Honda CBR150R as it offers the best power to weight ratio in the everyday rpm range. Pricing will further decide the fate of CBR150R in India as higher displacement products are available at impressive prices.

Honda discontinued the CBR150R from India after BS4 emissions came into action. Fans are still eagerly waiting for the new variant while most would have switched to Yamaha R15 V3 to compensate their loss. Honda CBR150R used to be powered by a 149.4 cc, single cylinder engine producing 18.28 BHP at 10,500 rpm and 12.66 Nm at 8500 rpm. Honda claimed 134 kmph of top speed while 190 mm of ground clearance makes it effective for occasional all terrain rides.

Honda Bikes at Auto Expo 2018:  Honda India is expected to gain its lost lightweight superbike glory back at Auto Expo 2018. They have this as their last chance or fans will be heard talking about other brands when considering something INR 1 lakh onward.

They can only justify the placement of CBR1000RR at INR 16.80 lakh while all other products are slightly out of their segment. Even the CBR650F demands rational pricing while die hard fans are expecting too much from them this year.

Starting with the fully faired CB Hornet 160R, Honda may take covers from any one of the three CBR bikes (CBR150R, CBR250R and CBR300R) @ Auto Expo 2018. Apart from CBR250R, both others have a lot of scope as upcoming Yamaha R15 V3 and recently launched TVS Apache RR 310 are in desperate need of rivals. Regaining their position will not be as easy as before for Honda.

Kawasaki is planning something big and Ninja 400 will certainly rock this segment by claiming back the most powerful bike title under 400cc. Honda has this perfect moment to bring CBR400R and show them some real competition.

If Kawasaki is planning for Ninja 250, they can counter the same by CBR250RR. All in all, Honda has every product that other manufacturers could think but still they lack the urge to launch each possible segment in India like Kawasaki.

Honda Should Bring CBR400R to Compete with Ninja 400 in India

Honda India could once again showcase the PCX 150 and chances for its launch are even higher than ever. Honda CBR1000RR is the most impressive product around its price while performance of CBR650F makes it better than any other product in that segment.

The latter fails with high pricing due to its import route. Honda is India’s second largest selling brand by volume and they are presently enjoying profits that come through high volume sales of affordable products.

If they miss this opportunity to flaunt some muscle, Indian performance bike buyers may leave them exclusive to the commuter buyers for sure. Kawasaki is India’s highest selling sport bike brand while Harley Davidson sells twice in number and wins in terms of cruiser sales.

Honda Might Also Launch the Much-Awaited PCX 150 in India
