Mahindra & Mahindra have raised their investments forecast for the next three years by 20%. The SUV manufacturer is expecting the current auto industry slowdown to end soon and according to the brand the growth will return to the market in the coming months.

The company has planned to invest INR 18,000 crore during the fiscal 2020-22 period, which was previously INR 15,000 crore. Mahindra targets towards capacity expansion by adding new products to both its farms and automotive portfolios to make an investment in the areas where there are opportunities.

The group chief financial officer VS Parthasarthy said: “To plan for the short term, say one quarter, is always very difficult. However, when there is 7% growth in GDP expected, it calls about a certain amount of investment.”

The company recently declared its fourth-quarter results, and also predicted better growth in both passenger and commercial vehicle segments than the forecast of 3-5% and 10-12%, respectively, by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) for fiscal 2020. Mahindra estimates the tractor industry to grow 5% in the current fiscal year.

The Managing director of the company, Mr Pawan Goenka told ET: “Others may review their investment, but at least Mahindra is not slowing down. We are, in fact, increasing our CapEx and investment by 20% over a three-year cycle. We have not slowed down on our product development, we are working as aggressively as we have in the past on new product launches.”

This year Mahindra’s automotive design is focused on a transformation to BS VI emission standards, which is going to be introduced next year in April. A new C-segment SUV will be manufactured at the Chakan plant, which will also be produced with a different name for Ford, with which M&M has a product-sharing agreement. The company also said that they are adding a new press line and a paint factory that would be capable to handle 3 lakh units a year.

Apart from the SUVs, the company is also known for making tractors and the brand has decided to introduce a new manufacturing line for the same. The MD of the company also said that the investment in product development on tractors in the next three years would be more than the investment the company made in over the past five years.

Royal Enfield is ready to invest INR 700 Crore in the FY19-20, most of which will go into the development of global platforms at their under-construction technology centre at the Vallam Vadagal plant in Tamil Nadu. The production target for Royal Enfield motorcycles will jump from the current number to 9.5 lakh units for this fiscal, still 50,000 units lower than what most experts had guessed the way Royal Enfield posted the sales number in the start of 2018. The number will stay more or less similar for the Indian market while their new production centre in Thailand will see the introduction of the first non-Indian batch of Royal Enfield motorcycles. The production number for the new facility has not yet been revealed.

The two products falling under the 650cc segment will contribute to the increase in a number of units produced globally as not all markets are focusing on single cylinder engine under such heavy motorcycles. The South Asian regions can benefit from both the series of products while Europe, the US, and other developed markets will prefer the use of the bigger engine with more refined character and not a huge difference in price. The price tag of current generation Classic 500 and Interceptor 650 differs by less than INR 50,000 worth pricing and when equated for developed markets, the number remains just $1,000 or even less than that for several regions.

The introduction of Bobber 838 will further take things into the favour as brands like Triumph and Harley Davidson offer same segment products at a much higher price tag in comparison to these options. The Bullet Trials is already available in certain markets and will soon enter the remaining options with their increased production. Last year, Royal Enfield had a budget of INR 800 Crore for development and research, further clearing that their numbers are falling with passing months and so is the limit of spending on new products and technologies by the Indian brand.

Royal Enfield is on an expanding spree with CEO Siddhartha Lal ready to invest INR 800 Crore in business development, 2 R&D centres (UK & Chennai), new products and their third manufacturing plant near Chennai.

The spyshots of a 750 cc, twin cylinder motorcycle that was covered under the same body as Continental GT were seen first from Europe and then from India. They are moving forward toward their goal of becoming the world leader in middleweight segment.

The motorcycle has twin exhaust and shared most design elements with the cafe racer. The gain in production capacity in their third plant will allow to manufacture future products with much ease. Royal Enfield recently launched updated motorcycles in India (fuel injection upgrade) and in UK (Classic and Bullet with rear disc and ABS).

Not just that, their existing superstar product, Classic 350 can even be produced in more numbers for the domestic market. Last month, the motorcycle maker sold more than 60,000 units from their lineup.

The new plant will help them take the total annual production capacity to 8,25,000. Also, they can raise their exports to different international markets. The most powerful engine currently in the lineup is plugged into the Continental GT, producing 29.1 BHP and 44 Nm of torque.
