Petrol and diesel prices are slowly coming back into their normal range. The downfall has almost continued from last three weeks, bringing down the value for 1-liter petrol to INR 76.52 and diesel to INR 71.39 in Delhi. The reduction in price is more visible for petrol, with most states having a difference of around INR 3-7 from the last hike while diesel saw a steady fall of around INR 2-3. The price of diesel is higher than petrol in certain states, reversing the age-old trend of the country. The prices will fall further with the reduction in crude oil pricing in the international market.

The petrol and diesel prices across the country experienced a considerable downfall with the central government announcing INR 1.50 price cut on the excise duty. The value was further raised to INR 2.50 as oil companies have also pledged to absorb some of the value from their own profits. Not just that, the government has also asked the state governments to reduce the VAT on petrol and diesel, bringing another INR 2.50 drop in the price. States like Maharashtra and Gujarat have implemented the same, leaving buyers happy with a total drop of INR 5 in certain regions.

The price of petrol is now under INR 90 and diesel stays under INR 80 in all states. The benefit of INR 2.50 is applied across the country while most states are yet to announce their stand on the additional INR 2.50 drop. The petrol and diesel are now priced at INR 81.50 and INR 72.95 in the national capital, making it the most affordable pricing among four major cities of India. The number is Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai respectively. The drop in prices in union territories will be limited to INR 2.50 while states like Punjab, Bihar, Telangana, and Kerala still have much higher prices in comparison to others.

Fuel dispensers in India are being upgraded to support 3-digit petrol and diesel price display. An indirect warning from the retailers, the rising prices may not stop anytime soon before touching the 100-mark. The values are an all-time high, with petrol and diesel retailing for INR 91.34 and INR 80.10 respectively in Mumbai. The problem is with the old machines as they were programmed to display two-digits on the left of decimal value and needed an upgrade to support the third digit. Indian rupee is again witnessing a fall in comparison to US dollar, leaving 1 USD equal to INR 73.73 presently.

The government is still not making an excise duty cut as they fear a loss of revenue that comes from the fossil fuels. The result of high fuel price can be seen across the public sector pricing of services, with bus tickets costing more than what they were in October last year and prices of commodities going up by a considerable margin. The high diesel price means more cost for transporting food from one place to another while high petrol cost means bigger fuel bills for cars and motorcycles. The price for taxi services will also rise with increasing fuel prices.

The only way a person can save some money is finding an alternate way of transport that is eco-friendly and more cost-effective. Covering small distances like a trip to the market by foot or on a bicycle can help masses save time and fuel than waiting on congested traffic lights. The effect of rising fuel prices around the festive season can also have some indirect effect on vehicle sales, with tight budget buyers skipping the idea of owning something that will cost them more than usual in this part of the year. Expecting a strong rupee position is the only hope for the Indian users.

Residents of Parbhani district in Maharashtra are facing the wrath of increased fuel prices, with petrol now costing INR 91.32 per liter and diesel is at INR 78.94 per litre. The odd combination of USD-INR exchange rate and crude oil barrel price had made this case the worst ever in last few years. The Delhi price for petrol is INR 82.16 while diesel retails for INR 73.87 in the national capital. Mumbai, on the other hand, faces a much harsh situation with INR 89.54 and INR 78.42 for petrol and diesel prices respectively.

Most Indian states levy a different amount of VAT and thus, prices vary so much among all states. The excise duty on petrol is a central government levied value, similar in all states and currently at a very high rate. The government once increased the excise duty to cover a sudden roll down in pricing of the fuel and after that, they never reduced the value to help buyers lower down their budget on fuel. Petrol and diesel carry two different prices as both types of fuel are differently taxed in all states. The states that use diesel as the primary fuel for agriculture and industry offer lower tax rates.

Fuel Prices in Parbhani
Petrol at INR 91.32 and Diesel is at INR 78.94 in Parbhani (Maharashtra)

Others, where the primary use of diesel is for transportation, do not offer such reduction in tax values. The closest example for this is Punjab and Chandigarh, with petrol retailing at INR 88.22 and INR 79.10 per liter respectively. On the other hand, diesel pricing for both the states are much closer at INR 74.25 and INR 71.82 respectively. The numbers are much smaller than the diesel price seen in Mumbai, where no such tax reduction by the state is applicable. The situation is getting worse with each passing day.
