Government to Increase Excise Duty on Petrol & Diesel: Taking into consideration the coronavirus outbreak in India, the 2020 Finance Bill has been recently updated with some amendments. As the pandemic is uprooting the Indian economy on a worse level, the government has officially decided to mobilise additional resources that will further help to fight the disease in the country.

According to the recent amendments made to the 2020 bill, the excise duty on petrol and diesel has been raised by INR 8 per litre by the Indian government. The amendment in the Finance Bill has been passed in the Lok Sabha without any questions which means that the government can now increase the special excise duty on petrol to INR 18 and on diesel to INR 12.

Thus by the increase in excise duty, the government will be raising the retail price of petrol and diesel by INR 5 to INR 6 while the remaining will be borne by the private oil firms.

The reports further suggest that hiking the prices by INR 8 per litre, the government will be able to witness an increase in the annual excise collection by INR 1,20,000 crore. Since the government is expected to save around $15-20 billion in oil import bill and the recent increase in fuel prices will help India to manage the economic downfall which is expected to happen during the pandemic.

The increase in the retail prices of the fuel at this point of time could already harm the degrading economy further while at the same time increase the prices of several other essential products.

At present, the total central excise duty on petrol stands at INR 22.98 per litre and for the diesel at INR 18.83 per litre. If the government decides to implement the new excise duty sooner than later, the total excise duty on petrol prices will go up to INR 30.98 per litre while the diesel prices will witness a rise in the excise duty by up to INR 26.83 per litre which will further carry additional VAT.

India’s mega automobile manufacturing company – Maruti Suzuki has decided to hike the prices of its various models starting from January 2020. According to the brand, the reason behind the hike in prices is to tackle the rising input costs over the past year.

“You are kindly informed that over the past year, the cost of the company’s vehicles has been impacted adversely due to increase in various input costs. Hence, it has become imperative for the Company to pass on some impact of the above additional cost to customers through a price increase across various models in January 2020. This price increase shall vary for different models”, the company said in a regulatory filing.

Although in the last line of the official statement it is being said that the price hike may vary for different models, it is interesting to know that brand didn’t disclose the models that will fall under the price increase. In the last month, it was reported that the company dispatched 1,41,400 units to its dealers in the domestic market, and in addition to that, the company also sold 2,286 units of the rebadged Baleno (Glanza) to Toyota Kirloskar Motors.

The recent festive season did manage to make a change to the ongoing slowdown situation as Maruti posted a 2.3% increase in sales in October but the sales fell again in November by 3.3%.

A decline has also been recorded in the sales of major auto companies like Tata Motors, Honda Cars, Eicher Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra. According to the industry experts, the negative trend would continue as the deadline for the implementation of the BS6 emission norms by April 2020 is approaching. All the automobile brands including Maruti Suzuki are making their best attempts to reduce their inventory of BS4 models to zero prior to the deadline.

As per the official website of Bajaj Auto, the brand has officially hiked the price of the Pulsar 150 Neon commuter motorcycle. The company recently also increased the price tags of other motorcycles, which includes the entire Pulsar range in addition to the Bajaj Avenger series as well as the Dominar 400.

Among the entry-level 150cc bikes, one of the steepest price hikes has been witnessed by the Pulsar 150 Neon. The motorcycle is now available in the market with an ex-showroom price tag of INR 75,200, getting a price hike of INR 4,000 from the earlier price tag of INR 71,200. The 150 Neon is now listed on the brand’s official website with the updated price tag.

The Pulsar 150 Neon is powered a 149cc, single-cylinder air-cooled BS4-compliant engine, which is capable to generate 14 HP of maximum power and 13.4 Nm of peak torque. The motorcycle comes with a 5-speed gearbox.

Justifying the hike in prices as a wise decision, Mr Rajiv Bajaj, MD Bajaj Auto commented – “The Bajaj Dominar where it is about Rs 10,000 on the base of Rs 1,80,000 and on the Pulsar Neon about Rs 4,000 on an ex-showroom price of Rs 71,200. We are very well placed in those segments and there is a very good reason. As the adage goes, you must have the courage to change what you can, the humility to accept what you cannot and the wisdom to know the difference. I think our price increase has been very wise”.
