Hero Karizma ZMR is showing no signs of a comeback as the sales report for March 2019 listed the same among the worst selling products with 0 units registered during the 31-day period. In comparison to the Karizma, Bajaj Pulsar 220F registered 6,724 units in the same month. Hero Karizma is awaiting the third generation update as the present model is designed on the lines of EBR styling.

The full-faired design looks more like a track-specific motorcycle from the front while the rear section proves as the weak point for the Karizma. The first generation model was great in terms of design. Here is the complete sales report for Hero Karizma ZMR since its relaunch in India.

Karizma ZMR Sales Report

  • May 2018 – 17 units
  • June 2018 – 12 units
  • July 2018 – 14 units
  • August 2018 – 10 units
  • September 2018 – 11 units
  • October 2018 – 0 units
  • November 2018 – 4 units
  • December 2018 – 4 units
  • January 2019 – 4 units
  • February 2019 – 0 units
  • March 2019 – 0 units

Combined Sales (May-March): 76 units

Hero Karizma ZMR registered a total of just 76 units from the day it was relaunched in India. The engine still proves its worth with stress-free riding in all conditions. March 2019 was one of the worst months for Karizma as the sales number went down to zero.

Relaunching the same model of Karizma ZMR was the worst step from Hero MotoCorp and thus, they need to reconsider their strategy for selling a flagship model in India. Also, an average of 6-7 units per month is worst for India’s No.1 brand in terms of sales volume. The 3rd generation model of Karizma ZMR is expected to get Xtreme’s 200cc engine, as it is getting a good response from the buyers.

Hero Karizma ZMR Specs

  • Displacement – 223 cc
  • Maximum Power – 20 BHP @ 8000 rpm
  • Maximum Torque – 19.7 NM @ 6500 rpm
  • Number of Cylinders – 1

The top selling motorcycles from the 250cc-500cc segment have a fraction of number on their side in comparison to the smaller 150cc-250cc segment. However, Royal Enfield has posted a downfall in the sales number but the brand still retains four positions out of the first five bikes on this list.

The most selling motorcycle is the Classic series with 37,183 units while Bullet and Thunderbird are the next two with 13,495 and 5,091 units respectively. The tight hold of RE bikes on the 250cc-500cc segment is all due to these three options. Yamaha FZ25, along with the Fazer 25 comes next with just 1,508 units in March 2019. Royal Enfield Himalayan bagged the fifth position with 965 units on its side.

Royal Enfield Classic 350 Gunmetal Grey

The worst part for the high value for money product is that they are struggling to improve numbers, even after adding ABS to the package. The next two positions have been bagged by KTM bikes with 617 units for the 250 Duke and 470 units for the 390 series. Bajaj Dominar is yet to make a full comeback as just 350 units were registered in the 31-day period.

TVS Apache RR 310 was good for just 279 units in March 2019. It is a very capable product but lacks the price point to attract a big sales number. Mahindra Mojo made a surprise entry into the list as almost 50% discount on the model helped the brand post 171 units. The motorcycle didn’t have the ABS update and thus, could not make its way to the market in April 2019.

The list of best-selling 150cc-250cc bikes broke the 1 lakh units mark recently, with Bajaj Pulsar series registering 1,05,256 units for the month of March 2019. The number is massive, leaving even commuters in shame as the majority of bikes posted huge negative growth in the 31-day period. The rival TVS Apache also experienced a drop in number but still, was able to compete with 42,965 units. Apart from these two brands with multiple sizes and designs for their bikes, Yamaha FZ (including Fazer) and Honda Unicorn were good for 19,870 units and 11,062 units respectively.

These four were good for five-digit numbers while R15 was left behind by a small margin at 9,503 units. The hattrick from the Japanese brand is experienced here with the newly-launched MT-15 and SZ-RR posting 5,203 and 2,872 units respectively. The sales number difference is huge between these 2 bikes as Yamaha is better in selling premium motorcycles than regular ones. Honda CB Hornet 160R bags the next position with 2,446 units while Bajaj Avenger and KTM Duke 200 registered 2,166 and 2,017 units respectively.

Honda India (HMSI) has registered a huge drop in the sales chart of its scooters in the country. The drop is unbelievable at 40%, taking away the second position on the sales chart and passing the same over to TVS Motor (Read More).

Honda currently retails five different scooter brand names and out of them, only Activa has three different models with multiple variants listed under them. The best selling product is undoubtedly Activa, selling 1,48,241 units and registering a drop of 29% in YoY sales growth. The number includes Activa 5G, Activa 125 and Activa-i, showing how a figure over 2 lakh units could fall once the demand from buyers goes down in response to new sales policies throughout India.

Honda Activa 5G
Honda Activa 5G

The second best selling scooter is Honda Dio, posting just 6761 units and registering a 79% drop in the YoY number. Grazia was another superstar premium scooter and posting just 2262 units in March 2019 means 86% of drop for the scooter. Honda Aviator has already lost most of the fan following but, the number was never expected to be as low as 1133 units in the 31-day period. The 84% drop is huge and considerably contributes to the total drop in sales for the brand.

Honda Grazia DX
Honda Grazia DX

The worst case here was Honda Cliq as the scooter registered zero units in March and got a 100% drop in the YoY comparison. Honda has undergone a production cut to keep the inventory fresh as they are stuck with a lot of scooters with their dealers and the number will rise if they don’t slow down the production process. Honda scooters are the most reliable options across the Indian brands, leaving just a handful of options surviving their immense fan following. Those who are not into Honda prefer going for Suzuki Access, TVS Jupiter and few other options from Hero and Yamaha.

Royal Enfield 650 Twins registered 1700 units in sales report for the month of March 2019. The range of 650 Twins starts from the Interceptor 650 at INR 2.50 lakh while the top-spec Continental GT 650 can be had for INR 2.85 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Apart from the shade differences, buyers can select practical and functional accessories from a long list of available options. The number will increase gradually with time as around 850 potential customers of the Royal Enfield 650 Twins went for other options like Thunderbird 500 and Classic 500, both priced above INR 2 lakh, ex-showroom. The new 648cc twin-cylinder engine from Royal Enfield is good for 47 HP at 7250 rpm and 52 Nm at 5250 rpm. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox. KTM 125 Duke registered 3069 units in March 2019, claiming the highest selling spot in the brand’s lineup by beating the 200 Duke by more than 1000 units. The powerful 124.7cc engine, along with a long list of segment-first features has made Duke 125 the most desired 125cc motorcycle of India. The only obstacle in its exponential growth route is Yamaha MT-15, registering over 5000 units after claiming a huge INR 1.36 lakh price tag. The premium feel from both the motorcycles is worth-praising but, KTM takes the lead with better tyres, USD front forks, and handling-enhancing parts. The Yamaha motorcycle offers a better console and lighting system.

KTM 125 Duke Sales Report
3069 Units of KTM 125 Duke Sold in March 2019

KTM 125 Duke is powered by a 124.7cc, single cylinder engine, producing 14.5 HP of maximum power and taking the majority of 150cc bikes down with its performance. The price tag of INR 1.25 lakh makes it the most expensive motorcycle of its segment, costing almost twice as an average top-spec model of the 125cc league. As others struggle to have 80-section tyres for both the ends, KTM 125 Duke comes with a 150-section rear tyre with an orange finish on alloy wheels. The launch price of the model was INR 1.18 lakh while jump of INR 7000 was witnessed this month.

Top 10 Best-Selling 2-Wheelers in India (Sales Report): The top 10 two-wheelers and their sales number for March 2019 have a different story. The highest selling Hero Splendor registered 2,46,656 units for the 31-day period while second-best seller had the worst drop in number this season. Honda Activa registered 1,48,241 units in March, putting almost 50,000-1,00,000 units away from its average sales number. The drop is so huge that TVS overtook the Honda brand to become the 2nd best-selling two-wheeler brand in India. You can click here to view the brand-wise sales report for March 2019.

Hero Splendor

Hero HF Deluxe is the third best selling motorcycle with 1,46,162 units while Pulsar was good for 83,228 units. The report also clears that the rumours doing rounds on the internet regarding 1 lakh sales figure of the Pulsar were false. The Bajaj Platina scored the fifth position with 62,519 units while Hero Passion had a downfall with just 58,544 units in March 2019. The number was almost double last year. Hero Glamour scored the seventh position with 56,658 units while Honda CB Shine is missing from this list for the first time in the last few years.

Honda Activa 5G
Honda Activa 5G

TVS Jupiter got 53,424 units while Suzuki Access and TVS Apache scored 49,875 and 42,965 units respectively. The total number of units sold by all these two-wheelers was less than 1 million while the drop in sales was seen clearly among all options except Pulsar, Platina and Access. The reason is unknown for such a big drop in Honda sales while the gain in numbers is visible for Bajaj and Suzuki. Here is the list for the top 10 two-wheelers sold in March 2019.

The brand-wise sales report for March 2019 brings reshuffling of positions that were earlier assumed to be the same throughout the year. The first position has been bagged by Hero Motocorp with 5,53,302 units, registering a drop of 21.5% in the YoY number. The second position now goes to TVS Motor, taking away the spot from none other than Honda by getting approx 25,000 units more than the Japanese rival. TVS registered 2,47,710 units while Honda was good for 2,22,325 units in March 2019. Both the brands saw a drop in sales as TVS got 6.6% negative growth while Honda was the worst hit brand with 46.7% drop in YoY sales number.

Bajaj Auto could have got the third position too as they got 2,20,213 units during the 31-day period. The difference of approx 2,000 units could have been bridged easily if they had officially announced the arrival of new Dominar than letting fans enjoy the test reviews and spy shots. The first four brands have their own league like no other option in India, or even the remaining brands combined can cross any of the above-listed names. Yamaha is good for the fifth position with 72,676 units. The majority of sales number from Yamaha comes from motorcycles.

Suzuki India bagged the sixth position with 58,696 units. They are riding on the success of Access 125 and Burgman Street while motorcycle contributes a very small chunk of their sales number in India. Both these Japanese brands dethroned Royal Enfield from its earlier position, leaving the same with just a small gap from Suzuki. The 58,434 units from Royal Enfield is still a very lucrative number. Piaggio Vespa (including Aprilia) is the last mass-market brand with a four-digit sales number. They were good for 6221 units and all of them were scooters.

Kawasaki got 467 units in March 2019 while Mahindra got just 337 units during the same period. Harley-Davidson and Triumph were the next two brands with 205 and 65 units respectively. The units from Bajaj Auto includes KTM numbers while Ducati and rest of the 2-wheeler brands do not reveal their sales number.

Hero MotoCorp and HMSI (Honda 2-Wheelers) registered a massive drop in sales for the month of March 2019, wiping almost 3.5 lakh units from the sales chart in the 31-day period. The positions reshuffled for the first time in the last few years and drop in numbers are heartbreaking for the motorcycle/scooter fans of the country. Hero registered 5,53,302 units in March 2019. The number is massive in itself while one year ago, the brand was good for 7,04,874 units. The YoY drop is 21.5% for India’s highest selling motorcycle brand.

Honda, which was already seen as the biggest nightmare of Hero MotoCorp, got the worst hit ever with just 2,22,325 units in March 2019. The brand was earlier good for 4,17,380 units, clearly taking away 46.7% of the number in the YoY sales chart. This has made Honda the third largest brand instead of the second slot that it had from a long time with its brilliant Indian product lineup. As per the sales report of March 2019, TVS Motor is now the 2nd best-selling 2-wheeler brand in India.

Hero and Honda benefit from the popular Splendor (HF Deluxe too) and Activa brand names, with these counting almost half of their sales number in an average month. The focus of both the brands on the 100-125cc segment has made them the dominating duo for the commuter segment. Hero benefits from the lower than average price tags while Honda offers impressive engine options with reliability being the key point in both the decade-old rivals.

The presence of Honda Unicorn in the 150cc segment is prominent for sure while Hero recently entered the 200cc segment with the Xtreme 200R for some fair sales chunk. Both the bikes are definitely not the highest selling options of these sections as Bajaj and TVS are known to deliver the most effective bikes here.
