Suzuki Motorcycles vs Scooters (Sales Report): Suzuki scooters are gaining traction at an unbelievably-fast pace and sales number for February 2019 clears that the brand can no more be considered an active rival in the lightweight motorcycle industry. It was once considered the most suitable rival for Yamaha motorcycles but their rising scooter number has changed the perception of a common buyer. The numbers seen this month are shocking and here you can have a look at the distribution of sales number among Suzuki products.

Suzuki Motorcycles vs Scooters

Sales Report (February 2019)

Scooters

  • Access: 48,265 units
  • Burgman Street: 8282 units
  • Let’s: 0  units

Motorcycles

  • Gixxer (including SF): 584 units
  • Intruder: 0 units
  • Hayate: 0 units

Superbikes

  • Hayabusa: 26 units
  • GSX-S750: 8 units
  • V-Strom 650XT: 8 units
  • GSX-R1000R: 0 units
  • GSX-S1000: 0 units
  • V-Strom 1000: 0 units
Suzuki Gixxer 155
Suzuki Gixxer 155

The numbers are quite surprising as the popular Gixxer series, now available with ABS and dual disc brakes, sold just 584 units in the 28-day period. The Hayate is already on the verge of getting discontinued while Intruder posting 0 units is another conflicting affair from the Japanese 2-wheeler giant. The most selling product is the popular 125cc Access with 48,265 units while second place was bagged by Burgman Street with 8282 units. This clearly shows that only scooters are bringing in the profits presently.

Suzuki Hayabusa GSX1300R

The superbike segment is growing decently, with Suzuki posting 42 units through three different body types falling under the category. Hayabusa is a legend for its segment as posting 26 units for a motorcycle with 1340cc of capacity is an achievement for the brand. On the other hand, the INR 7.46 lakh worth GSX-S750 and V-Strom 650XT were good for 8 units each. The overall value of these 42 examples is higher than the value of all 584 lightweight motorcycles combined.

Suzuki Access 125

Scooters, on the other hand, are not just taking over in the Suzuki lineup as Yamaha is also getting a huge percentage of sales from the Fascino and Ray series of products. Only Honda Activa posted a number that was huge enough to make the Access feel lower than ever as Jupiter was good for just 423 units more than the Suzuki bestseller.

Bajaj Pulsar vs TVS Apache (Sales Report): February 2019 has again proven the fact that Bajaj Pulsar is unbeatable in its segment with 84,151 units in just 28-days of the month. On the other hand, the most designated rival to the lightweight sports series, TVS Apache posted 35,604 units during the same period. The gap is increasing gradually as earlier, both the brands were competing with a difference of fewer than 20,000 units and now, the gap has increased by approx 49,000 units. The sales number for Bajaj Pulsar is high due to the presence of Pulsar 150 and the same completely depends on the pricing factor.

Bajaj Pulsar 150 Neon
Bajaj Pulsar 150 Neon

Here is the distribution of Pulsar 150 (63,673 units individually) variants according to the official Bajaj Auto website. This leaves all other variants (180, 180 Neon, 220F, NS160, NS200, and RS200) good for just approx 21,000 units during the entire month. The pricing factor for the Pulsar is the strongest point as going through the starting price of Apache 160 will clear the same in a better manner.

  • Pulsar 150 Neon: INR 64,998
  • Pulsar 150: INR 76,800
  • Pulsar 150 Twin Disc: INR 80,794
  • Apache 160: INR 79,370
  • Apache 160 Rear Disc: INR 81,699

Above mentioned prices are ex-showroom Delhi.

TVS Apache RTR 160
TVS Apache RTR 160

The Bajaj Pulsar vs TVS Apache numbers will get further divided once ABS becomes mandatory for all bikes. Also, the 160cc engine size of the Apache attracts more insurance cost and further extends the on-road price difference between both the models. The introduction of 150 Neon gave Bajaj an exclusive monopoly over 150cc products, with only Honda Unicorn having the potential to bring a huge number in the presence of this most-loved Pulsar model.

TVS will need to have a regular 150 or 160cc model with Apache nameplate and watered-down performance and feature list to bring an ex-showroom price tag of around INR 70,000-75,000 (with ABS) to take on the Pulsar dominance in India.

The sales report for 150cc-250cc bikes in February 2019 is quite different from all others posted to date. The numbers can be seen falling for a maximum number of products, all thanks to the upcoming safety norms that guarantee just ABS-equipped bikes can be sold from April 1, 2019, for this particular segment. The slower speed of manufacturing was necessary as making more bikes would have resulted in the wastage of resources by the brands. Also, selling them at huge discounts later would have caused another session of loss like the one witnessed in BS3 to BS4 transition.

Bajaj Pulsar NS200
Bajaj Pulsar NS200

Bajaj Pulsar is the highest selling product with 84,151 units while TVS Apache is good for 35,358 units, with both getting their similar positions due to multiple variants under the brand name. Yamaha FZ is the third best selling product with 20,248 units while Unicorn registered a direct fall with just 14,741 units. Yamaha R15, despite getting ABS as standard, registered 8939 units in February 2019.

The first product is almost double in number when compared to the remaining products and the last one is merely visible among these high ranking products. Hero Karizma ZMR got zero buyers in February 2019, hinting for the need of permanent discontinuation of the second generation motorcycle. Even the premium motorcycle segment registered a few units for individual products in the same month. Reintroduced with a BS4-compliant engine, Hero Karizma was expected to fetch numbers close to Honda CBR250R.

As Honda is also pushing their quarter-litre machine for no reason, it’s high time for brands to know that their products have aged well. The need for an upgrade is pretty visible in Karizma and CBR250R as both carry the same design as seen in their launch in 2014 and 2011 respectively.

The Karizma was a bestseller in its first generation design, notably for the R variant instead of the ZMR. Even the first generation R and ZMR happened to be the flagship performance products with Pulsar 220F on the closest edge and CBR250R on the upper side.

The influence of EBR design for the next-generation models proved fatal for the brand and left them struggling with 100-125cc commuters till date. Fortunately, Hero Xtreme 200R is gaining traction among rivals and with equal hope, Hero MotoCorp is almost ready with the new xPulse. The 200cc platform is not just affordable, but also equally challenging for the rivals.

Top 25 Best-Selling Cars in India (Sales Report): February 2019 saw a slight change in sales trend as the first position was bagged by none other than Maruti Alto with 24,751 units. The number has gone up in comparison to the average monthly sales of the car. Maruti Swift scored the second position while Baleno was good for the third position. The results clear that hatchbacks were preferred over sedans and SUV in the month of February.

The fourth position goes to Maruti Dzire with 15,915 units while WagonR came next with 15,661 units. Maruti Vitara Brezza scored the sixth position with 11,613 units, showing a considerable drop in the average sales number of the best selling compact SUV. Hyundai i20 and Creta bagged the next two positions with 11,547 and 10,206 units respectively.

The Grand i10 and Tata Tiago again showed that hatchbacks were preferred in the month. Maruti Ertiga, Mahindra Bolero, Maruti Eeco, Omni and Hyundai Santro bagged the next five positions. The new and improved Ertiga is scoring great numbers now. The next ten positions were bagged by random products with no fixed pattern. Hero Karizma ZMR registered just 4 units in the month of January 2019. The brand once shocked everyone with the launch event for Karizma ZMR V2 in India, introducing the same old design that almost made fans cry after the discontinuation of the older design. It came back with INR 1.08 lakh for single and INR 1,10,500 for the dual tone shade. Here is a complete sales report for the Karizma ZMR for the last few months of its existence.

Hero Karizma ZMR Sales Report

  • May 2018 – 17 units
  • June 2018 – 12 units
  • July 2018 – 14 units
  • August 2018 – 10 units
  • September 2018 – 11 units
  • October 2018 – 0 units
  • November 2018 – 4 units
  • December 2018 – 4 units
  • January 2019 – 4 units
Combined Sales (May 2018 – Jan 2019): 76 units

The numbers are not even considered, taking into account that similarly priced bikes are good for five-digit sales number and Hero MotoCorp has more than 6000 touch points across the country. They have sold more than 80-million units, consisting mostly of commuter segment bikes like Splendor and Passion. Karizma was once the bestseller of its segment and now, the position is lost to Bajaj Pulsar 220F.

2018 Hero Karizma ZMR
Hero Karizma ZMR Dual-Tone Edition

Karizma is powered by a 223cc, single-cylinder engine, producing 20 BHP of maximum power at 8000 rpm and 19.7 Nm at 6500 rpm. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The model available now is equipped with oil-cooler and fuel injection as standard. They should have introduced the R variant alongside this ZMR, offering buyers with the same sort of power and a reduced price tag of around INR 90,000.

Karizma will witness a complete overhaul in the next two years, most probably bringing the bigger 300cc engine for direct competition to Apache RR 310. Also, most brands will move away from the existing segments as mandatory ABS rule will result in a further rise in effective pricing. Hero MotoCorp will focus on weight reduction and design enhancement, taking cues from the HX250R concept that never saw the daylight.

The trends are changing with the entry of Royal Enfield into the segment, with 600cc-1000cc bikes in India getting a new bestseller for the list. Royal Enfield Twins registered 1069 units in the month of January, leaving just a handful of units for all other motorcycles on this list. The price difference between these models is responsible for this huge gap, with a number of units for RE Twins expected to increase with passing months. Kawasaki Z900 was the second best selling product with 49 units.

Kawasaki Ninja 1000 scored the third position with 33 units while Ninja ZX-6R entered the list for the first time at the fourth position with 25 units. The fifth position is shared by Iron 883 from Harley Davidson and Kawasaki Ninja 650 with 22 units. Suzuki V-Strom is another potential product and entering the list at the sixth position further proves the same to the fans. It scored 17 units for the month of January 2019. The seventh position goes to Street Triple with 14 units while GSX-S750 got the eighth position with 11 units.
