According to the recent sales numbers revealed by Maruti Suzuki India Limited for September 2019, the brand has witnessed a total decline in sales by 24.4% as compared to the same month last year. The brand has been able to witness a total sales of 1,22,640 units last month which includes 1,12,500 units sold in the domestic markets, 2,952 units of OEM sales to Toyota, and 7,188 units sold in exports.

Comparing the sales numbers with September 2018, the brand has registered a total decline in sales by around 40,000 units. Comparing the total sales of financial months from April to September 2019, the brand has been able to witness a total sales of 7,40,911 units, leading to a 24% decline when compared to the 9,75,327 units sold in the same financial months of 2018.

In addition to this, the brand has only registered 1,10,454 units of passenger vehicle sales in September 2019 and registered a decline in sales by 27.1% when compared to the 1,51,512 units retailed in the same month in 2018. The overall decline in sales considering the bad overall economy in the country has hampered with the brand’s success in the market for the year 2019.

The major aspirants in the brand’s entry-level segment which includes the Alto, Wagon R, Celerio, Ignis, Swift, Baleno, and Dzire have been able to get a total sales of 77,264 in September 2019 while registering a decline in the total number by 29.1% when compared to the 1,08,892 units retailed in 2018 in the same month.

Coming to the UV segment, the major shots have been handled by Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ertiga, S-Cross, and XL6 that have registered almost similar sales when compared to last year. Judging from the recent data, the brand should focus on launching new UVs in the future to register better sales as well as to set a strong foothold in the automotive market once again.

The stakeholders in the auto industry unanimously have requested the Government to cut down the rates of GST to 18%. The president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Rajan Wadhera said in a statement that there is a major requirement to lower the rates of the GST to 18% from 28%.

In an official statement, he said – “Need for an immediate reduction in the GST rates has been agreed unanimously by all automobile manufacturers, including the two-wheeler OEMs. This was also reiterated at a recent meeting with the finance minister where all OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) participated”. Two-wheeler brands like the Hero MotorCorp have also nodded upon the idea.

There have been a number of reasons for this slowdown. First of all, the slump in our income growth and Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFC) crisis is the reason. It is unlike the other cycles that happened due to the global crisis. Secondly, cost pressure has been witnessed as over the FY19-21, there will be a hike in prices from 13-30 per cent which will be due to safety, insurance and emission-related costs. From April 2020, India will upgrade to BS-VI from BS-IV which will also constitute in a price increase.

There has been an expansion in the size of the pre-owned market which as a result impacts the demand for new vehicles especially when there is a hike in prices going on. Also, the drop in the current cycle in gross and earnings before interest depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margins is huge. It’s the first time that the decline in EBITDA is higher than gross margin.

The auto industry is going through an unparalleled crisis which has caused a steep drop in sales over months now. Dealerships across the country have been closed, huge manpower has already been slashed, also the production of vehicles has also been decreased as there is a huge drop in the demand. On the contrary, the Finance Ministry said officially that the GST rate is already below expectations and a further reduction can complicate the situation.

Auto Industry Slowdown (Motorcycles and Scooters): The condition of the two-wheeler market is not good from the past few months and just like the car segment, this segment of the market has also not been spared by the auto industry slowdown. Hero MotoCorp is the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer and the brand sold 5,35,810 units of motorcycles and scooters in July 2019. There is a decline of 19.2% in sales when compared to the sales number posted by Hero MotoCorp in July last year.

The Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) posted a sales figure of 4,55,000 units for July 2019, which constitutes a YoY decline of 10.53%. The company has 26.80% of the share of the two-wheeler market but still, they are trying to revive the sales as per the current market scenario.

TVS Motor registered a sales number of 2,08,489 units for July 2019, which is down by 15.72% in comparison to the sales figure posted by the brand in July 2018. The TVS motorcycles registered a sales figure of 1,08,210 units, which has declined by 10.88% whereas the scooter sales stand at 1,05,199 units and it is down by 11.60% as compared to July 2018.

Bajaj Auto’s sales number is also down by 15.1%, as the brand registered 1,70,978 units last month. In comparison, the company registered  2,01,433 in the same month last year. Even the retro-classic motorcycle manufacturer Royal Enfield has reported a decline of 26.6% last month, as they posted a sales figure of 49,182 units. In comparison, the brand was good for 67,001 units in July 2018.

Suzuki can take a sigh of relief as it clocked 17.5% growth by selling 62,636 units in July 2019. Mr Devashish Handa, vice-president, Suzuki Motorcycle India said – “July was an exciting month at Suzuki Motorcycle India as we launched new products and variants in both motorcycle and scooter category, further strengthening our product offerings for Indian consumers. We are steering ahead with full throttle to add more customers to the Suzuki family.”

In a recent report released by the Federation of Automobile Dealership Associations (FADA), it has been revealed that the ongoing automobile crisis in India has severely impacted around 2 lakh jobs within the last 3 months in order to combat the auto industry slowdown.

The report added that the cutting of manpower may continue as it is expected that there will be more showrooms that will be shut down in the coming months. According to FADA, the Indian government must look into the matter as soon as possible and implement a reduction in the GST rates so that a sigh of relief could be given to the auto industry.

In an interview, the President of FADA, Ashish Harsharaj Kale told PTI, ”The majority of job cuts have happened in the last three months…It started around May and continued through June and July”. Further adding to his statement he said – “Right now most of the cuts which have happened are in front-end sales jobs but if this (slowdown) continues, then even the technical jobs will be affected because if we are selling less then we will also service less, so it is a cycle.”

When enquired about the count of jobs that have been cut down he replied – “Close to about two lakh. It is a guesstimate that our members have already cut 7-8% of the jobs in most of the dealerships as the degrowth has been very high”.

In his statement, he further informed that at present, around 2.5 million people are directly employed in around 26,000 showrooms that are operated by 15,000 dealers, whereas another 2.5 million are indirectly employed in this dealership environment.

This drastic step to cut down the manpower in the automobile industry was the result of going down of the “margin of error” in the business hence hiking the prices to a great extent happened in the last three to four years.

Royal Enfield saw a steep decline in domestic sales and registered 27% downfall in July 2019. It is one of the most preferred brands by motorcycle enthusiasts who feel absolute pride in owning and riding a retro bike. The company prevailed in the market without facing any competition for such a long time but it could not save itself from the bumpy phase that the auto market is going through.

The parent company of this massive brand, Eicher Motors notified that a decline of 21.6% has been recorded for the Q1 of current Fiscal. The Chennai-based manufacturer managed to sell only 49,182 Royal Enfield motorcycles last month, which is way less than the sales number posted by the brand in the same month of the previous year. Last year, the brand managed to sell 67,001 units in July.

In contrast, Royal Enfield has registered positive growth in the international markets, where the brand managed to export a total of 5,003 units in July 2019 in comparison to 2,062 during the same month in 2018. The brand has recorded a bumper growth of 143% in terms of exports.

The brand has managed to register a yearly growth of 84% as it exported a total of 14,162 units in 2019-20 in comparison to 7,698 units in 2018-19. The reason for this growth is believed to be the success of the Royal Enfield 650 Twins. The series is powered by an air/oil-cooled 648cc twin-cylinder engine that generates a maximum power of 47HP and a peak torque of 52Nm.

Summarising the total sales figures, Royal Enfield sold 54,185 motorcycles in July 2019, which is less than 69,063 units sold in the same month last year, recording a decline of 22%.

Yamaha YZF-R3 registered zero units in the sales chart in June 2019, hinting at a possible launch of the next-gen model in India in the coming months. Every potential product first leaves the assembly line so that the dealers can sell the remaining stock across the country and then, most brands keep a gap of a few weeks before introducing the next-gen model.

Within the same period, most brands start accepting bookings for the new model and if Yamaha is on the same track, they will soon officially start accepting the pre-bookings for the next-gen model of the YZF-R3. The 2019 model of the sportbike was introduced internationally last year.

The huge 90% drop in sales for the Honda CBR250R confirms that faith on older products is getting weaker with each passing day. The model is now only available with an ABS-equipped braking setup and comes with an ex-showroom price tag of INR 1.95 lakh.

Options like the new Jawa 300 and other above quarter-litre bikes have given the freedom of selection to the buyers that were earlier missing from this segment. Buyers can even consider the new Bajaj Dominar 400 at INR 1.74 lakh and save a lot of money. Not just that, a lot of motorcycles priced lower than the CBR250R have more power output and features.

Honda is using the same old single headlight design for their product and getting options like TVS Apache RR 310 and the KTM RC 390 with a slight increase in the budget further worsens the situation. The brand is facing tough times for all the products as they had to cut production recently in order to avoid inventory pileup with their dealers.

The 249cc, single cylinder engine on the CBR250R is good for 26.5HP of maximum power. The recent entry of the all-new Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 at INR 1.71 lakh has further made the situation uneasy for Honda as the motorcycle undercuts its nearest rival by INR 24,000. Yamaha FZ25 is another reason for the downfall of Honda CBR250R in India.

Jeep India Registers Massive Sales Drop: Taking into account the sales figures of May 2018 and May 2019, the sales of the Jeep SUVs have dropped from 1,518 units to 977 units. The 36% drop in the sales can be understood by looking at several reasons which are responsible for Jeep to receive this amount of downfall in India.

Jeep Compass
Jeep Compass

First and foremost, the ever-increasing competition in the premium SUV segment has resulted in a drop in sales of Jeep. Tata’s recent SUV Harrier marked its presence in the market by entering into a segment which was dominated by the likes of XUV500 and Compass at a higher price range. In May 2019, Tata sold 1,779 units of the Harrier SUV beating the rivals Mahindra XUV500 and Jeep Compass by 584 units and 802 units respectively.

Tata Harrier
Tata Harrier

The other primary reason comes in form of pricing, where the base variant of Compass starts at INR 15.60 lakh, its two competitors in the market, the Tata Harrier starts with a base price tag of INR 12.70 lakh and Mahindra’s XUV500 base variant starts at INR 12.23 lakh. The difference in prices of the three SUVs clearly shows why the sales of Jeep Compass has received such a big drop.

Now, the competition is just about to increase as MG Motor has launched its first SUV in India. Known as Hector, the car looks quite promising and is likely to raise the bar. The bookings for the car are also now open with a token amount of INR 50,000. The pricing of the car is not yet revealed but it is likely to be priced around INR 15 lakh for the base model, and will directly compete with the Compass. Jeep India recently revealed the India-spec model of the Compass Trailhawk in India, and the launch is expected to happen in the coming weeks.

Maruti Suzuki is the worst hit car brand of India, regularly posting a decrease in sales numbers in comparison to their immensely praiseworthy sales figures of the year 2018. The total number of cars, including both import and export models, sold in May 2019 was just 1,34,641. For sheer comparison, the same month last year got 1,72,512 units on their side.

The overall decline in sales is 22% while comparing the local sales figures take the sales drop number even higher at 25.1%. The sales number for India is 1,21,018 units in May 2019 while the same month last year had 1,61,497 units for Maruti Suzuki.

The brand saw a huge drop in sales numbers regarding entry-level cars in India while those looking for full-sized sedans preferred other options in place of the new Ciaz. Every car in the lineup saw declining numbers, with Vitara Brezza posting a number that is almost 25% lower to its yearly average.

Maruti Super Carry, the only commercial vehicle in their lineup, saw an increase of 31% in the sales number. However, the number gained is approx 500 units higher than the May 2018 sales number. While many points into the direction of Hyundai Venue for Vitara’s downfall, the problem is even more serious.

The Vitara Brezza is available with just a diesel engine and buyers can be seen switching from diesel to petrol options for the compact segment. As they are unable to manage the needs of these sort of buyers, they are seen moving into Hyundai, Tata and Ford family with options like turbocharged petrol engines. The small cars are losing customers with a diesel engine as their first need and Maruti has even announced the discontinuation of the compact engine in the coming months.

The sales numbers will keep on falling if Maruti Suzuki doesn’t launch a new product with all the desired values for the Indian market. Moreover, the company must update its products to meet higher safety standards. The brand recently also shut down the production for one day to keep a check on the inventory pileup.
