Mahindra Funster, a roofless crossover design concept has been recently unveiled by the brand at the Auto Expo 2020 which has begun today itself. Making its global debut at the event, the Mahindra Funster will act as the source of an all-new design language that will be initially implemented on the upcoming next-gen Mahindra XUV500, which is expected to be launched by the end of the year 2020.

The upcoming XUV500 will feature an all-new exterior and interior design that will be inspired by the Funster concept. The brand has named the concept as “Funster” since the upcoming sports utility vehicle exhibits a ‘play-for-fun’ character.

Coming to the front fascia, the Funster features multiple vertical slats separated by an illuminating Mahindra logo in the middle. The brand has equipped the concept SUV with an all-new inverted L-shaped headlamp design mated to unique LED DRLs. The three-piece foglights have been housed neatly inside the front bumper while the illuminating Funster badge has been imparted to the chin splitter at the bottom. Other appreciated exterior bits include the likes of a roofless windshield design, finned alloy wheels as well as the thin LED tail lamps running across the rear bumper.

Coming to the interiors, the brand has imparted the Mahindra Funster electric SUV concept with Mercedes S-Class-inspired dashboard design while a longer touchscreen display is positioned at the middle which further elongates to the touch screen console. The overall design of the interior looks quite futuristic though the production variant of the next-gen Mahindra XUV500 will surely get a toned-down version of the dashboard.

The Funster has been equipped with a 59.2kWh battery pack mated to a motor at each axle which allows the EV to achieve e-AWD capabilities. The electric powertrain is capable of offering maximum power of 313HP while the top speed stands at 200kmph. The EV can accelerate from 0-100kmph in just 5 seconds. The battery is further capable of offering a range of 520km. It remains to be seen how the brand will make use of the concept traits into the production variant while one can guarantee more news on the thrilling product to be unveiled soon.

The recently commenced Auto Expo 2020 has witnessed the unveiling of the “close-to-production” model of Tata’s smallest SUV as of yet, the HBX. The all-new small SUV concept is based on the H2X concept that was initially showcased at the Geneva Motor Show in 2019 while the brand is expected to position the HBX under the Nexon in its portfolio. In addition to this, the production variant of the Tata HBX will only feature a petrol engine just like other small cars from Tata.

The HBX micro SUV concept features the brand’s all-new design language while is the second product under the brand’s portfolio to be based on the ALFA platform that is the underlying platform for the recently launched Altroz hatchback. The designers have toned down the H2X concept showcased earlier which resulted in the formation of the HBX concept though the overall body panels with a compact design language remain the same.

The front fascia of the SUV features the authentic Humanity Line flowing across the front bumper while the headlight setup has been neatly integrated inside the main cluster. In addition to this, the square wheel arches add to its sporty exterior profile while the prominent accents further accentuate the overall sports-SUV design language.

Coming to the rear design, the tailgate setup is divided neatly from the raked windscreen while the wider tyres with blacked-out alloy wheels complete the overall boxy outlook of the SUV. The brand has also offered the Tata HBX concept with a large carrier mounted on the roof that can accommodate a tyre as well as luggage.

The Tata HBX measures 3,840mm in length, 1,822mm in width and 1,635mm in height while the wheelbase stands at 2,450mm that makes it measure close to the Maruti Suzuki Swift in dimensions though tall enough to be called a compact SUV.

Powering the HBX will be the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine that caters to the Tata Tiago/Tigor and is capable of offering maximum power of 86HP. The engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox though one can also expect the brand to offer an all-electric version of the same sometime in the next two years.

Once launched in India, the Tata HBX will compete in the market with the likes of the Mahindra KUV100 NXT. Though there is no information on when the brand will launch the new concept though one can expect the actual production variant of the SUV to be revealed soon.

The unveiling of the Maruti Suzuki Futuro-e coupe SUV concept has officially kickstarted the biggest event of the Indian automobile industry, the Auto Expo 2020. Showcased as a design study, the Futuro-e concept will act as a basis of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki models while at the same time allows the brand to foray itself into the mid-size SUV segment.

Taking the high road, the concept designers at Maruti Suzuki has pegged the Futuro-e concept with a unique Coupe SUV outlook, different from any other mid-size SUV currently available in the market. The all-new concept has been specifically designed as an “Indian car with global sensibilities’.

The rear windscreen of the car has been integrated neatly inside the bumper and it offers the SUV a sporty outlook while the addition of thick C-pillars furthers adds to its exquisite persona. The sleeker tail light design with LED strip running across further imparts it with the quirky exterior.

Other special highlights of the Maruti Suzuki Futuro-e concept includes the well-lit and distinctive LED headlight and tail lights setup, a panoramic sunroof, large wheels with unconventional alloy wheel design as well as the overall wide outlook that offers it a bulky look.

Coming to the distinctive interiors, the concept SUV has been equipped with a wide touchscreen display at the dashboard while there are numerous other displays specifically for the driver for controlling the interior function as well as adjusting the seat height or more. The recent unveiling of the India-spec Volkswagen Taigun ahead of the Auto Expo 2020 confirms that the carmaker is all set to enter the mid-size SUV segment. The production model of the car will launch in 2021 and it will resemble closely to the Skoda’s Vision IN concept. Both the SUVs will be the first products under the MQB A0 IN platform that will also form the basis of other future products for India.

The design of the Volkswagen Taigun SUV echoes the international T-Cross SUV, though the car is longer for India with more rear-seat space and enhanced comfort. The 2,651mm wheelbase is about 100mm longer than the Euro-spec T-Cross. The India-spec model of the VW Taigun has 205mm of ground clearance. The brand has worked on the design elements too. The bonnet of the SUV gets a more angular look while the brand has used a lot of chrome on the grille and bumpers.

Inside the car, it sports a multi-layered dashboard that places the touchscreen infotainment system high-up and in-line with the all-digital instrument cluster. There is a good and solid feel to all controls that looks neat throughout. The rear seat also looks decently good with reasonable legroom. In terms of features, the VW Taigun gets an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system which is further expected to get new-gen connectivity features. The SUV will come loaded with ample safety equipment that would be closely related to Latin America-spec VW T-Cross that received a 5-star safety rating from Latin NCAP.

Mechanically, we are expecting the SUV to be powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine that produces 130HP of maximum power. There will be no diesel engine option but the brand may consider launching a CNG variant to minimise the running costs. The products by VW have always been priced on the higher side when compared to their respective rivals but we can expect the things to change with the launch of Taigun in the Indian market.

Among several unveilings at the Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Media Night, the Volkswagen Group also unveiled the Skoda Vision IN concept, that made its world premiere in New Delhi. The production-spec model of the concept will be the first to be launched under the VW Group’s “India 2.0 Project”. It will also be the first model to be built on the company’s brand-new MQB A0 IN platform.

Though Vision IN is a concept by Skoda, it is of the prime importance to the VW Group. It previews a mid-size SUV that will go against the Hyundai Creta, Tata Harrier and Kia Seltos. The prototype model of the vehicle provides a glimpse of a handsome and bold-looking SUV.

It resembles the design of Skoda Kamiq sold abroad but with a more bold and upright nose, with the trademark chrome-established Skoda grille flanked by split projector headlights and an angular front bumper featuring large air intakes. Other design elements of the SUV include plastic cladding all around, prominent roof rails and large 19-inch alloy wheels.

The back of the concept also shares its design traits with Kamiq. The Skoda Vision IN concept features an additional light strip that stretches the width of SUV along with a three-slot skid plate similar to the one on the front. In terms of size, it is roughly the same length as that of the Hyundai Creta, that is about 4.26-metres.

Coming to the interior, the concept car features a thin chrome bar that spans the length of the dash. To make the car look more appealing, Skoda has used bright orange shade on a lot of parts that includes the dash, door panels, centre console, and the front armrest.

The Skoda Vision IN concept gets a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system right next to the Virtual cockpit digital instrumentation. There is a three-spoke steering wheel along with the buttons for phone controls, voice commands, lane assist and cruise control.

Mechanically, the production version of the midsize SUV is expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that will produce 150HP of maximum power along with a peak torque of 250Nm. There will be no diesel option on offer but a CNG variant could be there on the list.
