As per the latest buzz, the 1st BS6-compliant TVS 2-wheeler is expected to be launched in the market in the coming days. The report has been officially confirmed by K N Radhakrishnan, the company’s Director and Chief Executive Officer. The brand is yet to disclose the exact details related to the launch of the BS6 models.

Commenting on the upcoming launch, Mr K.N Radhakrishnan added – “We will start introducing BS-VI from November, early part of November, and start supplying it to the market. Definitely, the last quarter of this year will be completely BS-VI supplies into the market, so that we can proactively remove all the BS-IV, sell the BS-IV, and we are ready for the March 31 deadline, given by the government. So we are working towards that and we always keep about 5 weeks of forwarding sales stock.”

The recent reports confirm the launch of BS6-compliant TVS motorcycles though, the brand has not disclosed any information regarding the expected price increase in comparison to the current-gen BS4 models.

Since Yamaha is all set to unveil its BS6 motorcycle range first, one can expect TVS to follow the same route and launch the BS6 motorcycles in the first phase followed by the BS6 scooters in the next phase. The entire BS6 TVS portfolio will be launched before the new emission norms commence in the country from April 1, 2020.

Some reports also suggest the debut of Apache RTR 160 4V with a BS6 engine in the coming days. The updated motorcycle has been spotted several times testing on the Indian roads. Since the brand has recently updated the Apache RTR 200 4V with a Bluetooth-enabled console, the BS6 variant of the motorcycle is not expected to be revealed along with the 160cc variant. It is being speculated that the BS6 TVS motorcycles will carry a premium of around 10%-15% over their existing price tags.

The 2019 model of the TVS Jupiter Grande edition has been officially launched by the brand at an ex-showroom price tag of INR 62,346. The new scooter variant has been allotted a place above the Jupiter Classic variant, which is presently available in the market at a price tag of INR 59,990. One of the major features that set the new Jupiter Grande edition apart from the rest is the Bluetooth connectivity.

The new segment-first feature from the brand has been christened as ‘SmartXonnect’. The Bluetooth feature offered to the Jupiter Grande is the same as seen on the NTorq 125 though the latter has been equipped with a fully-digital instrument console while the former features a semi-digital instrument panel.

The TVS’ smartphone application allows the rider to connect his smartphone to the scooter which further offers the text and other notifications in addition to the riding units. The notifications are only offered to the Android phones while the Bluetooth connectivity is possible for both the Android and iPhone users.

In addition to the call alerts, text notifications, the instrument panel also offers a helmet reminder feature. It is a small pop up icon that comes up every time the scooter is started and reminds the rider to wear a helmet. The over speeding alert feature, on the other hand, offers an over speeding notification on the screen whenever the rider goes beyond the speed limit. The rider has to set the default speed limit for the alert to work efficiently while it can also get the default data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Coming to the cosmetic changes, the TVS Jupiter Grande now features a new blue paint scheme in addition to getting new alloy wheels, chrome highlights as well as a new cross-stitched seat cover. Powering the scooter is the same 109.7cc engine that does duty on the ZX variant. The engine is capable of churning out a maximum power of 8HP and a peak torque of 8.4Nm. The recently launched Jupiter Grande competes in the market with the likes of Hero Maestro Edge and the Honda Activa 5G.

Suzuki Access Beats TVS Jupiter (Sales Report): Access registered 54,524 units in the month of January 2019 pushing Jupiter to the 3rd position at 51,300 units. Access 125 is now the 2nd best-selling scooter in India after the Honda Activa series. Honda sold 2.13 lakh units of Activa in January 2019.

The 125cc scooters were not that good in the sales chart a few months back but price hike for the 110cc models and decent pricing for the Access has helped Suzuki strengthen its market position.

Suzuki Access 125 rivals Honda Activa 125 and Hero Destini in its segment. Still, the price point for Access makes it a direct rival to Jupiter’s top variant. Access is more powerful, weighs decently good and comes with an ageless design that suits almost every personality.

The 125cc, single cylinder engine on the scooter is good for 8.7 HP and 10.2 Nm while the Jupiter comes with a 110cc engine producing 8 HP and 8.4 Nm of torque. The former comes with 101 kg of wet weight, making it seven kilograms lighter than the Jupiter and offering 1.8 Nm of more torque.

The ride quality is great on both the scooters as both are available with telescopic forks and offer 12-inch tyres. The alloy wheels are available as standard on the Jupiter while the top model of the Access comes with alloy wheels. The steel wheels are good for the base variant of the Access 125.

TVS Jupiter, rivaling the mighty Honda Activa in the Indian scooter market, has packed some muscle before the festive season. TVS Jupiter Grande Edition is an example of perfection for the scooter market, with the popular scooter getting itself loads of equipment and special body shade to gain more buyers through exclusivity. It has been priced at INR 55,936 for the drum brake variant and INR 59,648 for the disc brake variant. Both prices are ex-showroom Delhi. The first batch of Jupiter Grande has reached the dealerships. The limited period model comes with beige panel finish, diamond stitched tan leather seat and Grande #1 JD Power moniker on the front body.

The front fender features a chrome highlight, similar to the piece seen on the Jupiter Classic. The addition of LED headlight and semi-digital instrument console made the package even more valuable for Indian buyers. They are offering an analog speedometer with rest all information on the digital display. TVS Jupiter is powered by a 109.7cc, single-cylinder engine, producing 8 BHP at 7500 rpm and 8 Nm at 5500 rpm. The engine comes mated to an automatic gearbox. Carrying features like telescopic forks and gas charged monoshock makes it truly comfortable for most conditions.

The rise in pricing for products is really intense as the base variant of Jupiter costs INR 51,488 in New Delhi. The ZX variant, not even equipped with a disc brake, carries a price tag of INR 54,436. The addition of disc brake costs almost INR 2000 over this variant. The most expensive Jupiter variant is Classic Edition, carrying a price tag of INR 57,468 in India. That equates to INR 6000 of more ex-showroom price than the basic variant. The base variant of Jupiter comes with LED tail light and black inner body panels. Rivals in the Indian market include Hero Maestro Edge, Honda Activa, Suzuki Lets and Yamaha Ray ZR.

Commenting on this launch, Mr. Aniruddha Haldar, Vice President (Marketing) – Commuter Motorcycles, Scooters & Corporate Brand, TVS Motor Company, said:

Lakshay Anand, a young YouTuber running his channel ‘Born To Ride’, completed his Kashmir to Kanyakumari ride on a TVS Jupiter. The 8000-kilometer distance was covered in 25 days and his friend, Sharoon Khan, accompanied him on a Honda Activa throughout the ride.

Both riding scooters was a special part of this journey as many riders refer motorcycles for this challenging tasks. Also, this proves that buyers going for Honda Activa and TVS Jupiter are investing their money into trustworthy products for sure. Not everyone has the courage to get almost a month out of their life and ride through most states of the country.

K2K Ride on a TVS Jupiter by Lakshay Anand
Kashmir to Kanyakumari (K2K) Ride on a TVS Jupiter by Lakshay Anand

He has already completed many other rides and using scooters has been his specialty from the beginning. Lakshay has been to Bhutan through Sikkim and Nepal before on an Aprilia SR150.

He has recorded all his experiences on this YouTube channel and one can experience changing climates, different roads and almost entire North and South India through his videos.

The experiences were mixed as he also went through certain difficulties during his ride. The most popular video out of all was shot on Mumbai Pune Highway where he exposed traffic police accepting bribes openly.

The journey from Kashmir to Kanyakumari exposes riders to extreme weather variations like ice cold mountains, deserts, rainy highways and certain highly populated cities with back-breaking traffic. It takes a lot of courage to ride in all these conditions. He faced an unusual moment when goons tried to attack him on the highway.

TVS Jupiter comes with an impressive 109.7cc, single cylinder engine producing 7.88 BHP and 8 Nm. On the other hand, Honda Activa comes out as even more powerful option with 8 BHP and 9 Nm. Both scooters are offered with an automatic gearbox as standard. You can Click Here to watch the related videos on Lakshay’s YouTube channel.

TVS Sales Report: TVS Motor Company is riding the wave of success by bringing all new products to the Indian market. They sold a total of 3,04,795 units in April 2018, registering growth rate of 24% from 2,46,310 units sold during same month last year.

These numbers include 11,377 units (April 2018) and 5,303 units (April 2017) of three wheelers. When getting a number without three wheelers, TVS was good for 2,93,418 units in April 2018. This number can be further broken down into 89,245 scooters and 1,31,704 motorcycles. Remaining number of products fall in moped category (TVS XL 100).

TVS recently launched Apache RTR 160 White Race Edition in India

Exports are also a strong section for TVS as they got 61,798 units exported in April this year while last year, the number was smaller (40,221 units). Highest jump was seen in their three wheeler business with 114.5% growth YoY while lowest was witnessed from scooter section.

It seems like Jupiter and others are struggling to add big number due to rising competition. TVS currently retails five different models in Apache section while commuters also form a large number on their side. Popular models include TVS Sport and Star City Plus. Their single highest selling product is Jupiter.

TVS Jupiter is preparing hard to take on another milestone as it will soon be launched with fuel injection in India. If this happens anytime soon, Jupiter Fi will be the first Indian scooter to offer fuel injection for better mileage and class leading refinement.

Yamaha used fuel injection to boost efficiency of FZ series in terms of mileage. Most brands are using this way to attract more customers as one can get fuel injected Glamour or even optional models from TVS Apache and Bajaj Pulsar. Here, the model looks exactly same as carburetor fed variant and even came without disc brake.

Not just fuel injection will be offered with this package but one also gets sync braking system, which is actually a renamed version of combination braking in TVS products. It seems like they are testing these two technologies on regular vehicles and may offer them under new shades this year.

TVS Jupiter is India’s second highest selling scooter brand with more than 2 million Jupiters on Indian roads. This change from carburetor to fuel injection has left the choke space empty, which most probably, can be used in placement of phone charging slot.

TVS Jupiter is offered with a 110cc, single cylinder engine producing 8 BHP at 7500 rpm and 8 Nm at 5500 rpm. The engine comes mated to an automatic gearbox. They will keep the engine same while fuel efficiency is expected to improve by a small margin.

It may result in a price increase of INR 3,000-4,000 as Suzuki charges the least for this tech with their Gixxer SF. It can even be a possibility that TVS manufactures these components in house and my save on additional cost that most brands charge for importing parts like ABS and fuel injection. They may launch the product around mid 2018.
