SV Stickers, a motorcycle customization shop in Chennai has recently wrapped a Yamaha R15 Version 2.0 in a colour combination of gloss metallic bright blue and gloss black. The combination of two enchanting colours offers the motorcycle a distinguished look that is powerful enough to turn heads on the road.

The windscreen of the motorcycle has been adorned with a glossy wrap while the headlight setup features a hint of glossy blue detailing to match with the overall look of the bike. The glossy metallic bright blue wrap goes all the way from the front mudguard to the side fairing and the fuel tank has also been finished in the same shade.

The tail light of the motorcycle has been adorned with a glossy black look while the addition of minimal blue detailing at the rear end adds to the unique styling of the sportbike. Apart from getting a wrap to the body panels, this typical Yamaha R15 Version 2.0 remains mechanically unchanged.

Powering the motorcycle is the same 149cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, fuel-injected engine that is capable to generate a maximum power of 17HP and a peak torque of 15Nm. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The suspension duties are handled by telescopic forks at the front and a motocross suspension at the rear.

In terms of braking, the Yamaha R15 V2 features disc brakes on either side. The 150cc sportbike was discontinued in India a few months ago to make way for the R15 V3, which is currently available in the market with a price tag of INR 1.45 lakh (ex-showroom).

Yamaha YZF-R15 is a miraculous machine for sure. Have you ever imagined what happens to an R15 V2 when you push a turbocharger into action? TuneBoss has already worked on it and what you see here is the Yamaha R15 Turbo with a claimed top speed of 180 kmph on the dynamometer.

The Thailand-based custom performance house has used a turbocharger on the R15 V2’s puny 150cc engine, giving young riders an exact idea of how fiercely the technology works in the real-world riding conditions.

Yamaha R15 Turbo Video

The intake has been placed on the lower left side of the Yamaha R15, right next to the engine. The instant rise in acceleration is purely visible after a certain range as in the beginning it feels more like a stock model of the R15 V2 but the mid-range quickly achieves speed with almost 20 kmph every second.

The top-end then again takes some load and the bike struggles to reach the claimed top speed. Still, it takes only 10 seconds for this typical modified Yamaha R15 Turbo to reach 180 kmph from standstill on a dynamometer.

The turbocharged model is capable enough to generate a maximum power figure of around 23HP. The stock model of the R15 V2 is good for 17HP and the modified model gets 6HP extra with the turbocharger.

The race-spec exhaust system further helps the sportbike to achieve such an amazing top speed. The custom-made R15 Turbo is finished in the bright orange shade and is equipped with a custom tank pad, rear seat cowl, and a tyre hugger.

In terms of the design, the front fascia is also different from the stock model of the YZF-R15 Version 2.0, carrying projector headlights and bigger headlight cowl. Yamaha recently discontinued the R15S and the R15 V2 in the Indian market. At present, the entry-level sportbike is available in only variant namely R15 V3 with an ex-showroom price tag of INR 1.45 lakh.

Yamaha R15 V1 vs V2 vs V3 (Detailed Comparison): Yamaha R15 was initially launched in India in 2008 and ten years later, the third generation model arrived with better-than-ever performance and equipment list. The R15 V1 was the first motorcycle of its kind, using race-derived chassis, powerful engine, and technology that was missed on most of the products in 2008.

The motorcycle featured liquid cooling, fuel injection, and an aerodynamic full-faired body with perfect proportions for that time. The first generation ruled the tracks for a short period of time as September 2011 witnessed the launch of R15 V2 in the country. The motorcycle was essentially an R15 V1 with better tires, refined design lines, and a head-turning tail section.

Yamaha used a better-looking exhaust, refined engine, and better colours on the second generation model. The 149cc engine on the motorcycle remained unchallenged for a full decade before the introduction of their new 155.1cc engine on the third-generation model.

The current generation of the lightweight motorcycle, popularly called R15 V3, is good for 1.6HP worth more output in comparison to the first two models, which generate 17HP of maximum power. Not just that, it comes with an all-digital console, slipper clutch, and ABS over the old versions.

Yamaha even introduced the R15-S variant to help customers who missed the rear seat comfort on the R15 V2. In comparison to the Indonesia-spec model, the Indian version of the R15 V3 is equipped with conventional telescopic front forks and different footpeg holders.

The model is also the first one to bring LED lights as standard. The first generation model weighs just 131kg while one decade of engineering has added 11kg to the overall motorcycle weight. Also, the iconic 1290mm of wheelbase for R15 V1 is still the best-in-class figure in the Indian industry.

The Yamaha R15 V2 you see here has been heavily-modified by Kunal Custom Design and the sportbike is now loaded with a long list of features, leaving even concept cars behind with advanced sensors and first-in-class equipment. The modifier has equipped the 2nd-generation Yamaha R15 with high-tech features like keyless ignition and fingerprint security system.

Apart from the button, the electric starter can now also be operated through a connected smartphone and even the infotainment display on the motorcycle. The instrument console has been mounted on the handlebar while empty space under the visor has been filled with a 6.9-inch display with an independent fingerprint sensor and battery health display. The infotainment display also supports touch inputs.

Modified R15 Video (Part 1)

Once the owner places his finger on the scanner, the mirrors automatically retract from the closed position. This modified Yamaha R15 V2 even features a rearview camera while the front comes with an Autologue-inspired fairing that covers the headlight portion in such a way that the motorcycle gets an edgy and aggressive look.

Kunal Custom Design has installed projector headlights and LED indicators that also act as emergency lights when a button is pressed. The motorcycle also features an anti-theft alarm, navigation system, notification for the calls, voice control and instructions. Not just that, the rider has fitted a sensor to help the headlights achieve automatic high/low beam function. Another great feature of this modified Yamaha R15 V2 is a cruise control system.

Modified R15 Video (Part 2)

The complete wiring has been modified to achieve mobile control and complicated systems like fingerprint start and cruise control. The cost of modification is not exactly known as the modifier roughly calculated the raw material cost (not including the cost of the wires) to be over INR 20,000. The motorcycle has a unique wrap on the body, flaunting faux carbon fibre finish on most parts to add visual enhancement to this typical Yamaha R15 V2.

Yamaha R15 V2 owners know the feeling of riding a young supersport motorcycle and each one of them must have imagined how a similar genre flagship would look under their possession. Taking the front seat here, a Vietnam-based modifier has converted the second generation Yamaha R15 into a BMW HP4 Race.

The motorcycle featured here feels slightly different as the front and rear wheels have been kept stock to avoid engine overkill. The front fascia is derived from the INR 86.70 lakh BMW HP4 Race, leaving the headlights behind for this aerodynamically efficient fairing and golden USD front forks.

Unlike the BMW HP4 Race, this modified R15 features the much-celebrated pillion seat. However, the high tail design of the R15 V2 has helped the motorcycle look like a proper race bike. The modifier has used decorative faux carbon fibre parts to add more sporty feel into the product.

In fact, the addition of frame sliders on both sides will protect the fragile side panels during a sudden fall. The side fairing of the motorcycle features HP4 and BMW monikers while the seat used here comes with better padding than the stock model of the BMW HP4 Race for more comfort-filled hours on the track.

The exhaust used here is different from the original one on the BMW HP4 Race but this one is also equally impressive in terms of exhaust sound and design improvement. The effect of this Akrapovic unit is unknown as performance values for the motorcycle are not yet available.

Even though the 149cc engine on the R15 V2 is good for 17HP, the level of attention paid while making this motorcycle confirms that eyeballs will roll with its tyres on every road for sure.

The braking also stays stock, leaving this Yamaha-based HP4 Race with a single front and rear disc, that too without any other addition except for the Brembo master cylinder. Here is the complete photo gallery of the Yamaha R15 V2, which has been modified to look like a BMW HP4 Race.

DS Design is back with an awesomely wrapped Yamaha YZF-R15 V2. The motorcycle comes wrapped with a base shade of matte grey that gets fluorescent green inserts for a perfect contrast. The side profile looks almost stock while the biggest change can be spotted at the front of the R15 Maniac.

The complete front fascia of the motorcycle is covered with the grey wrap and it now features two round projector headlights. The setup contains Neon stripes that place themselves in a V pattern, falling right on the point of contact between the front fairing and the visor.

For those who have been through the tough hydrocarbon chemistry lesson in their school, the theme can be clearly seen on the side fairing, fuel tank and even the awesomely finished matching helmet for the motorcycle. The owner of the sportbike has used a free flow Akrapovic exhaust on the motorcycle to enhance the overall performance of ’The Maniac’.

The rear fender has been removed to get the typical R-series race bike look on this modified Yamaha R15 V2. The motorcycle is powered by a 149cc, liquid-cooled and fuel-injected engine producing 17 HP of maximum power and 15 Nm of maximum torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox.

Yamaha R15 V3 vs R15 V2: Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 is available in India for INR 1.40 lakh (ex-showroom India). It is the most powerful version for this lightweight SuperSport series as none other variants could even reach the power output that is offered in the stock version of Yamaha R15 V3. In fact, the list of changes in the third version is huge, covering nearly every aspect of the motorcycle after such a long time.

Yamaha R15 V3 vs R15 V2

1) Design & Style

The departure from the design language of R15 Version 2 is pretty clear on all sides. The new motorcycle is highly inspired by flagship Yamaha R1 and race-spec R6 as one could see the design elements that are shared between three of them. Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 is more upright while R15 V2 is more like the old school race designs that went extinct with the launch of next-generation R1. The fuel tank now feels much bigger in size while capacity is still 1 litre less than the original version.

Yamaha R15 V2

Yamaha R15 V3

2) Headlight Design & Layout

Yamaha R15 V3 vs R15 V2

Here comes the next big thing for Yamaha R15. The third generation motorcycle comes with twin LED headlights when compared to those huge twin halogen units on R15 V2. New headlights are sleek, helping the designers save more space for air channelling and weight reduction.

The next generation face was even not possible without these headlights as the pointy nose of R15 V2 is now replaced with mature and aerodynamically more efficient facial expressions. Being LEDs, they were supposed to have a more powerful overall throw but as per most of the owners, the headlight intensity of R15 V3 is poor in comparison the R15 V2.

3) Engine, Power & Torque

Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 carries the most powerful of all 150cc engines available internationally. The 155.1cc, single cylinder, liquid cooled and fuel injected motor is good for 19.3 HP at 10,000 rpm and 14.7 Nm at 8,500 rpm. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox. If compared to the R15 V2 (17 HP and 15 Nm), the values for R15 V3 are highly satisfying. A rider’s personal video in Indonesia has claimed 144 kph of top speed (as per the speedometer) for the YZF-R15 V3.

Technical Specification Comparison

Yamaha R15 V3 vs R15 V2

Yamaha R15 V3  Yamaha R15 V2

No. of Cylinders 1-Cylinder 1-Cylinder

Max. Torque 14.7 Nm @ 8500 rpm 15.0 Nm @ 7500 rpm
Fuel Supply Fuel Injection Fuel Injection
Engine Cooling Liquid-Cooled Liquid-Cooled

4) Assist & Slipper Clutch

The 6-speed gearbox on Yamaha R15 Version 3 is paired to slipper clutch for better on-track performance. The other name for slipper clutch is back torque limiter, briefly explaining the function of this equipment through these three words only. It does not just eliminate the effect of engine braking during deceleration, the freewheel mechanism helps the rear wheel stay in place and keeps the required traction alive. Whenever the rear wheel tries to push the engine over its own limit, the clutch disengages itself to save the rider as well as motorcycle from the resulting loss.

5) Variable Valves Actuation (VVA)

Yamaha R15 Version 3 is equipped with VVA technology. It stands for Variable Valve Actuation. It is a technology that selects intake cam lobes for low speed and high-speed range. A certain rpm is considered as the shifting point (6000 rpm in this case) and that results in linear acceleration on both the ends. That helps the rider enjoy the feel of getting an equal ratio of power on both low end and the top end of the rev range. If we remove VVA from the setup, one would surely feel the need of riding above a certain rpm limit as most riders of the R15 V2 feel in real-world driving conditions.

6) Suspension

Yamaha R15 V3 vs R15 V2

The 2019 model of Yamaha R15 comes with standard telescopic forks for the Indian market. USD forks were limited to the Indonesian model only. The benefits of upside-down forks include improved handling, longer slider for more reliability and added rigidness to stay alive after hard braking on high capacity motorcycles. The motorcycle stops when we brake but all of the impacts go right into the suspension as it is the connecting part between the tire and rest of the body. All of the body weight pushes the suspension to the opposite direction on a bike.

7) Instrument Console

Yamaha R15 V2 has one of the most beautiful consoles among all bikes in India. Still, it lacks a lot of features when compared to arch rivals and that resulted in the use of a fully digital instrument console on the third-generation model. The console on V3 now comes with features like instantaneous mileage, average fuel used, gear shift indicator, digital tachometer, and VVA indicator. It is easy to read and has dedicated odometer, trip-meter and a large speed display in the middle. One can see the digital fuel indicator on the extreme right side.

8) Shades

Yamaha R15 V2 is known for its gloss filled shades from its initial days of launch. They have been actively playing with colours from almost one decade as every year, a couple of new shades were found for the motorcycle. This time, Yamaha R15 Version 3.0 is offered with Racing Blue, Thunder Grey, and Darknight as their shades.

Yamaha R15 V3 use better tires when compared to the present version. The front measures 100/80-17 while rear used on V3 is massive 140/70-17. This adds more traction to R15 as a newly developed high-performance engine sends much more power to the rear wheel in comparison to the old version. R15 V2 comes with 90/80-17 and 130/70-17 tires at front and rear respectively. Wider tire, along with its wider sidewall helps the motorcycle absorb bumps in a better way on R15 V3. The brake, tire and suspension combination enhances the overall performance of this motorcycle.

As stock shades of R15 V2 are filled with stickers all over, those who love watching plain shades would feel at home with this typical motorcycle.

Using Red as major shade, they have offered black inserts at important positions to make things better than ever. Alloy wheels were left black to get the best out of proportionate design language of the R15 V2.
