Yamaha R15 registered 18% sales drop in the month of April 2019. The popular sportbike brand sold 4975 units last month in comparison to 6034 units posted in April 2018. The biggest reason for this drop is the production halt of the R15-S, which was definitely priced at a much more lucrative price point than the R15 V3.
Another reason could be the high price tag of the 2019 Yamaha R15 V3 ABS, touching INR 1.40 lakh mark for the standard model and INR 1.42 lakh worth price tag for the Darknight variant. Yamaha is riding on the success of the recently launched MT-15 and collectively, both the premium motorcycles flaunt a respectable sales number for the brand.
The powerful machine is available with a 155cc, single cylinder engine producing 19.3 HP at 10,000 rpm and 14.7 Nm at 8,500 rpm. Yamaha listed the same at 15 Nm at the time of the initial launch of R15 V3 in India and later, dropped the value by 0.3 Nm at the time of the introduction of the ABS model. The reason for the change is still unknown.
Yamaha R15 V3 is priced only INR 4000 higher than the MT-15 and thus, buyers still prefer getting safer dual channel ABS motorcycle instead of the naked version with a single channel ABS unit. Yamaha should have launched the MT-15 with dual channel ABS, even if the pricing would have been similar to the R15 V3.
