According to the recent media reports, the Japanese two-wheeler maker Yamaha has applied for the R2 trademark. The brand has filed the application recently and it looks like the new brand name would be used for an upcoming motorcycle. The application has been filed in global markets such as Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the Philippines rather than India.
As we already know the naming pattern of the company such as R15, R3, R6, R7 and the R1. Hence, we can assume that the R2 nametag could be the name for the new 200cc sports bike. Yamaha currently does not offer 200cc motorcycles in India that meet the mandatory BS6 emission standards. However, these all are just guesses as the brand’s official confirmation is still awaited.
It goes beyond doubt that automaker companies frequently act as part of an aggressive effort to safeguard certain names that may be utilised in the future. Hence, registering the name means that the product will be released in the coming years. The R2 nametag would most probably be used for an affordable yet feature-rich 200cc motorcycle that would be competing with the likes of the KTM RC 200 and the Bajaj Pulsar RS200.
Another thing mentioned by Yamaha executives in one of the recent interviews was that the company is planning to launch new 150cc-250cc bikes in the Indian two-wheeler market. In this way, we can’t deny the possibility of an all-new 200cc Yamaha sports bike for Indian bike enthusiasts.
