2018 Yamaha SR400 has been launched in the US for $5999 (INR 3.90 lakh approx). The motorcycle is available only in Galaxy Blue shade that undoubtedly feels similar to conventional Yamaha Blue shade available on almost every performance spec bike in the company lineup.
Yamaha SR400 reminds everyone of the legendary RD350 but both have no similarity except for few similar design lines. This one is a single cylinder, 399cc air cooled motor while RD350 used twin cylinder motor for that class leading power. The engine comes mated to a 5-speed gearbox and uses fuel injection like most Yamaha bikes.
The motorcycle is good for 22.9 BHP at 6500 rpm and 27.4 Nm at 3000 rpm. This makes SR400 a great machine for everyday riding as ample torque in this range brings effortless riding on all surfaces. The way Yamaha SR400 delivers all this makes it a direct rival of Royal Enfield Classic 350 but once cannot compare both these due to high pricing difference.
Even when this is manufactured in India, Yamaha won’t be able to bring the price under INR 2 lakh. When compared in terms of equipment, SR400 is not that well loaded. You only get a single front 298mm disc brake.
Rear comes with a 150mm drum brake while suspension on offer stays dual shock absorbers. Front also comes with conventional telescopic forks.
Yamaha uses 90/100-18 front and 110/90-18 rear tyre for optimum grip. All these features do not justify this high price tag and that may be the reason why Yamaha prefers products with more equipment and performance in India.
The motorcycle weighs 174 kg while top speed is rated at 129 kmph (Approx.). SR400 carries 12.10 liters of fuel and offers limited 130mm ground clearance. It comes with 785 mm of comfortable seat height.
