According to a recent report by Financial Express, Yamaha has temporarily discontinued the YZF-R15S from the Indian market. The reason for discontinuation is the unavailability of ABS in the model, that too with a reason that the 149cc engine of the motorcycle is not being shared with any of the other motorcycles listed under the Yamaha lineup.
The R15S was a decent selling product and dealers were happy taking care of the customers who wanted supersport-inspired engine dynamics and regular motorcycle riding seat. Unlike the Fazer 150 that will need a totally different setup to adjust with the new FZ-S legacy, the YZF-R15S could also share some of the dynamics with new R15 V3 to bring back a decently-priced R-series model.
The current-gen R15 V3 carries INR 1.40 lakh worth price tag, leaving behind all the expectations that buyers had with a sweet INR 1.25 lakh on-road price bracket. Taking away the premium features and detuning the engine to some extent can help Yamaha bring the next-generation model of the R15S series.
The upgraded Yamaha R15S could feature single-channel ABS, FZ-inspired console and many such cost-cutting measures. The MT-15 is currently available with single-channel ABS and part sharing will not be a problem at all. When it comes to the Fazer lineup, it seems like the brand will permanently discontinue the 150cc model in the Indian market.
