Driving with Closed ORVMs will Attract Fine from 1st October, 2018

There are many people in Chandigarh who do not use their outer rear view mirrors (ORVMs) when driving in the city. They keep them closed and only open them once they are out on the highways. This has caused many accidents in the city which has driven the administration to levy a fine on the violators.

The reason given by such violators is that they prefer a more “aerodynamic” ride in the city. This new rule will be implemented from 1st October this year and there is an ongoing awareness campaign by the Traffic Police of Chandigarh telling people about the new rule that will be implemented in the coming months. The fine levied on the violators will be Rs 300. This decision was taken by the Standing Committee of the Administrator’s Advisory Council.

There is a smartphone application available in Mumbai which allows the citizens to capture images of the violators and report them to the traffic police. A similar application will be introduced by the Traffic Police of Chandigarh. The people who report the violators must capture the vehicle registration number as the challan that will be generated will be done so on the basis of the details of the owner of the car.

There are many three-wheelers in the city who do not have the proper registration or permits to operate in the city. Such concerns were raised after a number of accidents occurred in the city involving the three-wheelers.

The Senior Superintendent of Police, Traffic, Shashank Anand, said that the department is working on the issues and will have a game plan soon. The older CCTV cameras in the city are also being replaced with newer models which would enable them to capture vehicle details even at night with night vision. Such steps are surely going to make the city a bit safer.
