The Suzuki Jimny is quite the hype of in the world right now. Just in the Indian markets, there were great speculations of the car being launched but the hopes were shattered when Maruti Suzuki announced that the cute and cuddly Jimny will not be making its way to the Indian markets. Euro NCAP decided to test the metal with crash tests of the Jimny and the results have been listed. The Suzuki Jimny has been awarded three out of five stars when it comes to the safety of the vehicle.
A series of tests were performed to test the crashworthiness of the Jimny. The low rating of the car is due to the age-old design of the ladderfame chassis and the low provision of the driver aids. After the crash tests, Euro NCAP wrote, “In the frontal offset test, there was insufficient pressure in the driver’s airbag to prevent it from ‘bottoming out’, allowing the head to contact the steering wheel. The passenger compartment was extensively deformed in the offset test, especially around the door-frame and the score for the driver’s chest was penalised for this unstable collapse. Combined with marginal dummy readings, protection for this body area was rated as weak.”
“Although dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of both driver and passenger, structures in the instrument panel and dashboard were thought to pose a risk of injury to occupants of different sizes, and protection was rated as marginal.”
“Tests on the front seats and head restraints showed marginal protection against whiplash injury in a rear impact. A geometric assessment of the rear seats indicated good protection. The standard-fit autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system performed well in tests of its functionality at the low speeds, typical of city driving.”
The crash tests show that the Jimny is not the car to be in case of an accident. Looking at the car, it seemed like it is quite tough but the recent reports show that it crumples during crashes where other cars like the Tata Nexon secured quite a high rating.
