Officially Confirmed: Maruti will Not Launch the Suzuki Jimny in India

For the enthusiasts who were waiting for the Maruti Suzuki Jimny in India, there is a sad news. The company has announced at a press event that the much-awaited fourth generation of the Jimny will never arrive at the shores of India. The company put an end to all the rumours and reports that suggested otherwise. The reason that they cited for the termination of the plans is that the segment in which the three-door car would have been launched is too small to drive any significant sales numbers. The Jimny, if it had been launched, would have had to compete with the Mahindra Thar and the Force Gurkha, the former being the one dominating the segment.

A couple of months ago, the Japanese market had seen the launch of the fourth generation of the Jimny and it was powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine that produced a maximum power of 104 hp at 6000 rpm and a peak torque of 130 Nm at 4000 rpm. The Jimny sported an all-wheel-drive system and came with an option of a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox.

The other car which the company has totally disavowed for the Indian markets is the Swift Sport, citing that the development of the 1.4-liter Boosterjet turbocharged engine would have driven up the cost of the Swift Sport and made it irrelevant for the Indian markets.
