Google has officially confirmed that its upcoming Pixel 4 smartphone will come featured with a soli-powered face unlock system with IR sensors. It will come with a motion sensor which will be powered by Project Soli. It’s a radar-based gesture control technology, developed by Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects team back in 2015.
The Soli-powered gesture is a new sensing technology that uses motion-sensing radar to detect touchless gesture interactions. Google has combined unique software algorithms with the advanced hardware sensor, so it can recognize a set of predefined gestures and detect when the user is nearby. This will allow the user to snooze alarms, skip songs, and also silence phone calls only by waving his/her hands. Google has also mentioned that the Motion Sense feature will be available only in select countries.

The face unlock function of the Pixel 4 is better than before as with Soli radar chip the smartphone will turn on the face unlock sensor only when one needs to unlock the phone. Google also said that if the algorithms and face unlock recognises the user, the phone will open as you pick it up, all in one motion. Even if the user is holding the Pixel 4 in an upside-down position, the face-unlock will work perfectly. One can also use it to secure payments and app authentication too.
For security and privacy of the user and his data, the face unlock will use facial recognition technology that is processed on the Pixel 4 so that the image data never leaves your phone. The images used for face unlock are never saved and shared with other Google services. The face data is securely stored in Pixel’s Titan M security chip. The Soli sensor data is also processed on the phone and it is never saved or shared with other Google services.
