OnePlus Opens its First Research and Development Centre in India

On August 26, 2019, OnePlus unboxed the news of its first research and development centre in India. The facility centre has been opened at Hyderabad in Telangana. The company is looking forward to investing a huge amount of INR 1000 crore into its R&D facility over the next 3 years.

In an official interview, the company said, “The facility will not only play a critical role in the development of Artificial Intelligence and Machine learning in OnePlus products but will also drive innovations that are centric and relevant to the company’s Indian community”.

The research and development centre in Hyderabad will be using the experience and the ingenious skills from the city that has grown to become one of the biggest IT hubs in India. The company also announced that Ramagopala Reddy Palukuri will be the Vice President and R&D Head of OnePlus India.

Only after analysing all the critical factors, the company decided to set up the hub at Hyderabad, regarding which it said, “Apart from having some of the most passionate OnePlus community members, the city is also one of the most active start-up zones in the country, especially in the space of emerging technologies,”.

The centre was inaugurated by the Former Minister of Telangana, K. T. Rama Rao and Jayesh Ranjan IAS who is the Principal Secretary for IT and Industries at the Vamsiram’s IT Park at the Wipro Circle in Nanakramguda. The facility centre will be having three labs namely camera lab, communications and networking lab, and an automation lab that has been designed for the purpose of camera development, performance testing, 5G testing, software with a focus on AI and others.

The centre will be working on the development of India-specific OxygenOS. The centre is the first step towards the company’s future ventures of making India its home ground about which the Founder and CEO, Pete Leu said, “In three years, we plan to grow the new R&D centre in Hyderabad into our biggest globally. We plan to re-focus our R&D efforts on a large scale and drive innovations in India for the global product, especially on the software side with special emphasis on Artificial Intelligence, 5G and IoT.”
