Oppo Unveils World’s 1st Smartphone with Under-Screen Selfie Camera

Oppo has marked itself as the first smartphone company to introduce the world’s first mobile phone prototype with an under-screen selfie camera. The company recently revealed the mobile phone at the Mobile World Congress in Shanghai. Oppo plans to hide the components to feature their smartphone with a bezel-free display.

To make this technology work, Oppo is using a customised transparent material for the display that will feature a redesigned pixel structure, allowing the light to pass through the camera. The sensor for the camera is also larger than other selfie cameras with a wider aperture lens in front.

Oppo claims that the quality of the display will not be compromised. A report by the Verge says that putting a screen in front of a camera will reduce photo’s quality, however denying them the company officials clarify that the algorithms developed for the phone are tuned to the hardware in order to deal with such issues.

Oppo Unveils World’s 1st Smartphone with Under-Screen Selfie Camera

There is a combination of algorithms that are used for multi-frame HDR, defogging and white balance correction to make photos look good as they would look with a standard selfie camera. Normally Oppo shows off their new tech only months before a commercial launch as we have seen in Reno which gets 10x zoom. So we can say that the smartphone which will feature the new under-screen selfie camera will launch in the coming months.

But Oppo still acknowledges the fact that putting a screen in front of a camera will affect the photo’s quality, with problems like haze, glare and colour cast that needs to be overcome. Well, as the company has taken the initiative to launch such technology in the market we can expect to see a new smartphone with a bezel-less display, no-notch, and no pop-up front camera in the coming future.
