Honda 2-wheelers India has announced officially that it will reveal its Electric 2-wheeler plans in India on March 29th 2023. Officially making it known was via the launch of its new Shine 100cc commuter bike on 15 March.
While Honda has yet to reveal details around its first electric 2-wheeler, like everyone, I am confident it will be a scooter. However, we have found patents which reveal that the company has been working on an e scooter based on Activa. In addition, company chief Atsushi Ogata also announced at the Activa H-Smart launch event that the company will introduce its first electric scooter during march next year.
But later this month, Honda will announce its plans. Maybe we’ll get to see an early prototype of this e scooter. Still, while the first model may have fixed battery pack, Honda has said that its longterm goal is for models to come equipped with swapable batteries that can be exchanged via a swap network.
This is already available in other markets from the company using its PCX electric e scooter. The battery to drive the PCX is a removable Honda Mobile Power Pack battery and the brand has also recently been found to set up shop on our shores, namely called Honda Power Pack Energy India. This company aims to create, and subsequently develop, the swapping network for such batteries.
First they will build a new EV production line at Honda’s facility in Vithalapur, Gujarat, and then develop it. It needs to be done in order to meet its electrification goals. Narsapura, Karnataka, will be the home for its EV operations in the long run.
