Bajaj Auto has finally returned to the scooter segment by introducing an all-new electric scooter under the new Urbanite sub-division, which was teased for a long time. The new e-scooter gets the iconic ‘Chetak’ nameplate that has made a comeback in the Indian market after 14 long years.
The electric scooter qualifies for the Fame II subsidy and will be most probably positioned as a premium product. Coming to the looks, the new Bajaj Chetak gets a modern design and high-tech features. It has a round LED headlamp that is integrated with a horseshoe-shaped LED DRL (Daytime Running Light).
It has a front apron-mounted LED side turn indicators with vertically stacked faux air vent. The rear end of the new Bajaj Chetak features perfectly positioned split-style LED tail lamps and turn indicators. Talking about the comfort, the single-piece seat of the scooter looks well-padded and spacious for both the rider and pillion.
The 2020 Bajaj Chetak has a long and wide footboard that will provide sufficient legroom to the rider. It also has a storage space with a lid that can be locked. If we look mechanically, there are no official details available about the electric motor that powers the scooter.
As per the reports, it is being said that Chetak will use a 4kW electric motor with an IP67-rated lithium-ion battery pack. It will have two riding modes – Eco and Sport, and in a single charge, the scooter is being said to return a total range of 95km in Eco mode and 85km in the Sport mode.
The suspension duties of the 2020 Bajaj Chetak are handled by a single-sided telescopic fork at the front and a monoshock at the rear. The scooter is equipped with a disc brake at the front and a drum brake at the rear.
The 12-inch alloy wheels are wrapped in tubeless-type 90/90-section MRF Zapper K-tyres. The electric scooter will also get regenerative braking and will come equipped with Combined Braking System (CBS) as standard.
The all-new Bajaj Chetak features a round-shaped fully-digital instrument cluster that will offer loads of information to the rider. It also gets a Bluetooth connectivity feature and the riders can connect their smartphone via a dedicated application and the console will display essential information like speed alert, calls, messages, and turn-by-turn notifications.
Other vital information that it will showcase includes battery range, speed, odometer, trip meter, service-due indicator, and clock. Bajaj’s Chetak electric scooter will be available in six colours namely silver, red, blue, black, classic ivory, and gold.
The pricing of the scooter will be revealed by the company at its Pune launch in January 2020 though, we can expect Bajaj to price it around INR 1.25 lakh (on-road). In terms of availability, the new Chetak will be launched in Pune and Bengaluru first, and then in the rest of the major cities across India.
