Detailed Comparison: BMW G310R vs BMW G310GS

BMW G310R vs BMW G310GS (Quick Comparison): Since the last three decades, BMW Motorrad is known for manufacturing bikes with large engines and they have never entered the small engine market. But the scenario has now changed with the launch of G310R and G310GS. The German giant tied up with the Hosur-based TVS Motorcycles and started the production of the 300cc engines.

It was initially thought that the Germans would make naked bikes while TVS would handle the fully-faired ones. But with an increasing demand for the adventure touring bikes, BMW entered the market with bikes built on the same platform. BMW G310R and G310GS are available for INR 2.99 lakh and INR 3.49 lakh respectively. The prices mentioned here are ex-showroom India.

Both the G310R and the G310GS sport the same 313cc four-valve single-cylinder air-cooled DOHC engine that produces maximum power of 34 horsepower and a peak torque of 28 Nm. Both the engines are leaned towards the rear of the motorcycles and the cylinder heads are turned 180 degrees. The inlet manifold is on the front side of the motorcycle while the exhaust manifold is on the rear side. The fuel efficiency on both the bikes is similar, with a combined mileage of 30 kmpl, as is the top speed, claimed by BMW at 143 kmph.

At first glance, you might mistake them for being the same. But on taking a closer look, you will start to notice the subtle differences between the bikes. The seat of the G310GS is bigger than the G310R, although the difference is marginal. The G310GS has a small quarter panel on the sides below the rear thugs while they are absent on the G310R. The fuel tank of the former is bulkier than the latter and it can help a person commute further on a single tank of fuel.

At the rear of the bikes, there are differences as well. The grab handle on the G310GS is equipped to carry a luggage box while on the G310R, the grab handle is meant for a grip for the pillion rider. G310GS comes with Metzeler Tourance tyres 150/70 17 rear and 110/80 R19 front, compared to the G310R, which has 150/60-R17 rear and 110/70-R17 front.

The front suspension on the G310GS has long travel set-up to help the bike manage better on rough terrains. The adventure tourer has an immovable speedometer and visor assembly given the fact that the mudguard is attached while the Street Naked bike gets a movable assembly. Both the bikes come with 2-channel BMW Motorrad ABS as standard but it is switchable on the adventure tourer while the street version has it non-switchable.

The ride height on the G310R is fixed at 785mm, while the rider can switch it between 820mm and 850mm on the G310GS.  Here is a detailed specification comparison between both the motorcycles.
